Rick and Morty joke about Hugh Jackman’s marriage to Deborra-Lee Furness ages VERY poorly in season premiere

Hugh Jackman made a surprise cameo appearance in the season seven premiere of Adult Swim sitcom Rick and Morty this week.

Unfortunately, fans were left cringing thanks to an unfortunate scene that about the 55-year-old actor’s marriage to estranged wife Deborra-Lee Furness, 67.

In the episode, Hugh’s alter-ego runs into characters Rick Sanchez and Mr Poopybutthole at a nightclub and invites them back to his ‘man cave’ to continue partying.

Hugh’s character then spends the night singing, dancing, taking drugs, doing target practice with his Tony award, and and even taking nude photos of himself.

At one point, Hugh stares lovingly at a photo of himself and Deborra-Lee on their wedding day 27 years ago.

Hugh Jackman, 55, joked about his marriage to Deborra-Lee Furness, 67, during his cameo in the season seven premiere of Rick and Morty

‘The best bloody day of my life’, said Hugh’s character, to which Mr. Poopybutthole agreed: ‘My wedding was pretty great, too.’

In a joke that has aged rather poorly, Hugh replied: ‘I was talking about the Tony award.’

Given that Rick and Morty’s writers began working on season seven over a year ago, the joke was likely written before Hugh and Deborra-Lee announced their shock split in October.

The couple confirmed the news in a statement obtained by PEOPLE which began: ‘We have been blessed to share almost three decades together in a wonderful, loving marriage. Our journey now is shifting and we have decided to separate to pursue our individual growth.’

‘Our family has been and always will be our highest priority. We undertake this next chapter with gratitude, love, and kindness. We greatly appreciate your understanding in respecting our privacy as our family navigates this transition.’

The former couple signed the statement as ‘Deb and Hugh Jackman,’ adding: ‘This is the sole statement either of us will make.’

The pair had tied the knot in 1996 after crossing paths on set of Correlli in 1995.

During the course of their marriage, they adopted two children: son Oscar, 23, and daughter Ava, 18.
