Rio Ferdinand lauds Manchester United hero Marcus Rashford

‘That’s the difference between good players and top players… this kid is a top player:’ Rio Ferdinand lauds Manchester United hero Marcus Rashford for his key role in incredible come back at the Parc des Princes

Rio Ferdinand has hailed Marcus Rashford after he confidently dispatched the penalty that saw Manchester United reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

The 21-year-old slammed the ball home from 12 yards after United were gifted a spot kick following a contentious decision by VAR to penalise Paris Saint-Germain defender Presnel Kimpembe for handball in stoppage time.

Rashford picked the ball up and fired his effort past Gianluigi Buffon to send United through to the next round on away goals in the French capital.

Ferdinand, who played for United between 2002 and 2014, waxed lyrical over Rashford’s composure in such a decisive moment.

He said on BT Sport: ‘I love Rashford man, I love Rashford.

‘”Give me the ball, I’m taking it”. What I loved about this was that when this penalty was given there was no other person on that pitch who was getting that ball.

‘He went there and said “this is me, this is my stage. I want this responsibility” and that is the difference between good players and top players. This kid is a top player.’
