Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves are NOT the answer to Manchester United’s midfield woes, insists Rio Ferdinand as he warns his old club not to sign them both due to their lack of ‘mobility’
- Manchester United are widely expected to sign a new midfielder this summer
- Both Ruben Neves and Youri Tielemans have been linked with the Red Devils
- Rio Ferdinand though believes neither man is the answer to their midfield woes
Rio Ferdinand has advised Manchester United to avoid signing Ruben Neves or Youri Tielemans.
A midfield signing is believed to be the priority for the Red Devils in the summer transfer window.
United face the prospect of losing Paul Pogba when his contract expires at the end of the season, while there are questions over whether the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay are good enough to help them challenge for a title.
Youri Tielemans and Ruben Neves have both been linked with moves to Manchester United
When asked about Wolves star Neves, Ferdinand said on his Vibe with Five podcast: ‘I like him, he’s fantastic, he keeps the ball as well as anyone, a really good footballer.’
Ferdinand then added when it was put to him that United’s midfield next season should be Bruno Fernandes, Tielemans and Neves: ‘That wouldn’t be my choice, I’ve got to be honest.
‘I like them, good players, but if you think that midfield is getting you any closer to the other teams I’d argue against it. Mobility-wise we’d be lacking.’
Manchester United are expected to sign a midfielder with Paul Pogba currently set to leave
Ferdinand doesn’t believe Neves or Tielemans are the answer to United’s midfield problems
Neves has been an ever-present in the Molineux side since he joined Wolves from Porto in 2017 for a Championship record fee of £15.8m.
In his first season, he helped guide Wolves to the Championship title under Nuno Espirito Santo and was able to make the step-up to life in the Premier League.
He was linked with a move to both Manchester United and Arsenal during the January transfer window, though the West Midlands side slapped a £40m price tag on the 24-year-old.
Tielemans could be set to leave Leicester this summer with just one further year on his deal
United were reportedly interested in Neves back in January who was given a £40m price tag
Tielemans, meanwhile, is also on United’s radar as Leicester face losing the Belgium international this summer with just one year left on his deal at the end of this season.
The 24-year-old has been one of Leicester’s best players since he arrived in 2019 for £40m from Monaco.
His performances have taken a downturn with Leicester’s drop down the table from previous season, though he has scored six goals in 19 appearances.
Like Neves, Manchester United could face competition from Arsenal for Tielemans’ signature with the Gunners reportedly interested.
