Rio police probe after British father fell to his death

Police are probing claims of a sex and drugs party from the £2million apartment where a British father fell to his death.

The married tourist, 29, was found hanging from a pergola behind the complex in the upmarket area of Ipanema, Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday morning.

It is unknown at this stage whether he fell from the roof which holds a pool or his rented tenth floor flat.

Police say they are treating the death as suspicious and said his friends admitted to drug-taking and hiring prostitutes during the trip, though it is unclear whether or not the victim took part.

The man was father to a three-year-old child and leaves behind his wife, who is understood to be heavily pregnant.

It is thought the wife and his child did not accompany him on the trip but remained in the UK.

Local police detective Valeria Aragoa said the death was being treated as suspicious.

She said: ‘This could be an accident or murder — nothing is being ruled out.

‘They were on this trip to have a good time. They didn’t go to tourist spots, only nightclubs, taking women to their apartment. There are traces and reports of illegal drugs, like cannabis and cocaine.’

According to police, his friends told officers he used prescription drugs for schizophrenia, antidepressants and sexual stimulants.

A source told the paper: ‘We were informed quite a few women apparently visited the apartment and we’re looking into the possibility a woman was with the deceased at the time.

‘We are confused as to how the victim met his death. There is a possibility he was disorientated and flustered about something before he fell.’

‘In a statement, one of the men who accompanied the deceased told us they had not been to any tourist hotspots yet but had visited a number of bars, had drunk a lot, visited brothels and invited several call girls to the flat.’

According to investigators, agents found drugs in the rented apartment during a search.

Detectives said they had been advised by the victim’s friends that he used prescription drugs for a diagnosed mental illness.

Police said they will release the victim’s name once they have contacted close relatives.
