‘If anybody has ever dealt with someone with addiction, you know it has nothing to do with someone else,’ she told the audience.

‘They have to be ready. If you can be a small part of creating an alternative world for them that says, ‘Hey, I’m here. If you are clean, great.’ But there’s no credit I will ever take other than basically saying, “Here’s what I need to have happen,” or more importantly, “What can’t be happening.” But it’s entirely that person.’

Robert recalled that moment of truth as ‘the clearest conversation I’ve had my entire life.  You know when someone is being so clear with you on something and you go ‘there is zero go-room right now…. but ultimatums work!’

Susan clarified, saying, ‘But they only work if the person’s ready.’

The actor, who seemed eager to get away from the seriousness of the conversation responded in a high pitched voice, ‘You made me ready.’

In a 2009 interview with Harpers Bazaar, Susan shared that the line in the sand she drew resulted in Robert pulling into a Burger King parking lot and throwing his drugs into the ocean.

‘There’s something about [Susan] that is so pure and … right,’ The Singing Detective star contended in the same interview.  ‘But then there’s the other stuff too, the shadowy side of her that is delightful and that she shows only to me.’

Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie noted the couple had ‘the greatest illustration of a symbiotic marriage that I’ve ever seen.’

‘It’s a real yin and yang, and it’s made him a joy to work with. Robert would be a pain in the a** if he didn’t have Susan to police him’ and help him fight his dark side.

‘He battles with it now,’ the director explained, ‘there’s no denial or suppression going on. He’s fully engaged in life.’
