Robert Irwin reveals the animal he’s targeting now… after crocodile accident nearly made him miss the Logies

Wildlife warrior Robert Irwin is known for getting up-close-and-personal with crocodiles.

But the 20-year-old appears to be avoiding the large animals following his pre-Logies brush with danger.

On Sunday, Robert shared a photo that showed him getting very close with a unique croc species.

At first glance, he looked to be the picture of bravery, squatting barefoot next to the beast with one hand on the ground just centimetres from its body.

But on closer inspection, it appeared this crocodile was one of Robert’s own creations which he crafted out of sand.

Captioning the humorous post, Robert said that this species was a lot easier to wrangle than some of its more elusive cousins.

‘The old sand croc,’ Robert wrote. ‘These ones are easier to catch.’

Robert’s fans were quick to comment on the post, with Wiggles founding member Greg Page chiming in.

‘And a lot less dangerous I reckon,’ the yellow Wiggle replied.

Another fan chimed in with a similar: ‘Are they though? I hear the sand crocs always slip through your fingers.’

Others were quick to point out how much Robert resembled his late father Steve, who died in 2006, after being pierced in the chest by a short-tail stingray barb while filming in the Great Barrier Reef.

It comes after Robert suffered a freak croc-related accident just hours before the recent 2024 Logie Awards.

The wildlife warrior revealed details of his brush with death while chatting to Dr Chris Brown, 45, and Sonia Kruger, 58, on the red carpet last week at The Star in Sydney.

Sonia asked the young wildlife warrior if he was excited to be staying up so late before he revealed his pre-Logies brush with danger.

‘I just came straight in from catching crocodiles up north,’ he began.

Robert then went on to detail the dangerous incident and the steps he took to remedy the result in time for his red carpet arrival.

‘I just got my head smashed into a tree,’ he said nonchalantly.

‘I was on a croc’s head, it was a big makeup job but I’m here I’m excited and we are pumped and I get to do it with one of my best mates, which is awesome,’ he added, as he stood beside his I’m A Celebrity co-host Julia Morris.

The celebrity conservationist was rumoured to be bringing his mother Terri Irwin to the exclusive event, and stunned fans when he instead showed up with his IAC co-star Julia.

Viewers quickly took to social media to discuss Robert’s choice of date, as they joked they were surprised his ‘helicopter mum’ Terri let him attend without her.

‘So he ditched helicopter mum for TV mum,’ one fan joked while a second person added: ‘Surprised Mummy let Robert out by himself.’

‘That surprises me. Usually he takes his mother everywhere, even to the jungle,’ a third person chipped in.

‘Bet mummy wasn’t happy,’ another user wrote.
