Roberto Firmino is confident Liverpool can live up to their pre-season billing and compete for top prizes this season.

The Reds, who have not won a trophy since lifting the League Cup in 2012, came fourth in the Premier League last season but finished the campaign in blistering form and reached the Champions League final, only to lose 3-1 to Real Madrid.

Optimism has risen following the arrivals of the likes of Allison and Naby Keita in the summer and the Reds are now seen as the main threat to defending Premier League champions Manchester City.

‘I am optimistic and I believe Liverpool are capable of fighting for the greatest success this season,’ Firmino told The Mirror.

Firmino has been at Anfield since 2015 when he joined from Hoffenheim. And the Brazilian now feels very at home on Merseyside.

He added: ‘Everyone hears stories about what it means to be a Liverpool player, but, until you live it personally, you cannot really understand it. In my whole life, I never thought that I would get treated like I do here.

‘It’s a huge responsibility and we can only give everything back to the supporters that we can.

‘The Premier League is our main challenge, but also Europe, after reaching the final against Real Madrid and falling down last season.

‘That left us with a bad taste in our mouths, but we have to be patient and go game by game to achieve what we really want this time.’

Liverpool won their Premier League opener 4-0 against West Ham last season and now visit Crystal Palace on Monday night.
