Rochester teacher jailed after relationship with pupil

Christopher Hoile, who was head of history and politics at independent King’s School in Rochester, Kent, admitted six offences against the 17-year-old girl

A teacher at one of Britain’s oldest and most prestigious schools has been jailed for two years after engaging in sexual activity with a pupil.

Christopher Hoile, who was head of history and politics at independent King’s School in Rochester, Kent, admitted six offences against the 17-year-old girl.

The 43-year-old pleaded guilty to four charges of sexual activity with a child while in a position of trust, and two of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity while in a position of trust.

The offences were committed between October 2004 and January 2005. According to his Facebook page, Hoile started teaching at King’s in September 2004.

The coeducational day and boarding school is linked to Rochester Cathedral and claims to be the second oldest continuously operating school in the UK, having been founded in 604 AD.

Pupils are aged betweeen five and 18, and there is also a nursery and pre-preparatory school.

Senior school fees are £6,235 per term, or £10,130 per term for senior boarders.

Famous alumni include Nobel prize-winning chemist Sir Derek Barton, Second World War flying ace Edward Mortlock Donaldson, former Conservative cabinet minister John Gummer, DJ Pete Tong, and former Bishop of Trinidad, Douglas Wilson.

Hoile, who studied history at Oxford University, also states on his social media profile that he taught at University College School in London’s Hampstead between January 2001 and August 2004, and at Hasmonean High School in Barnet from January 1999 to December 2000.

He denied a third charge of sexual activity with the same teenage pupil, which was accepted by the prosecution.

Hoile, from Strood, near Rochester, was jailed at Maidstone Crown Court in Kent on December 14.

Sentencing had been adjourned for a probation report, but on that occasion the judge warned Hoile his offending demanded immediate custody.
