Suzi Quatro checks into our travel Q&A

This week rock singer Suzi Quatro checks into our travel Q&A.

She talks about her most memorable tour, her guilty travel pleasure – and more.

TRAVEL ESSENTIAL?

Moisturiser, mints and Valium.

GUILTY TRAVEL PLEASURE?

I like to be slightly inebriated on a long-haul flight — I think it helps you get through the journey.

MOST MEMORABLE HOLIDAY

Going to Hawaii. It seemed so idyllic with its palm trees, sunshine and sea, and I slept on the beach — it didn’t feel like the real world.

EARLIEST HOLIDAY MEMORY?

I grew up in Detroit, one of five kids, and my dad didn’t have the money to fly the entire family so he drove us all to Miami (three days and two nights) one Easter. I feel like I’ve been on the road ever since.

FIRST TRIP ABROAD?

Flying to the Pacific island of Guam with my band The Pleasure Seekers in the late Sixties. I remember looking down from the plane and being scared s***less that we were flying over so much water.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF BRITAIN?

I arrived in the UK in 1971 and instantly loved it, but thought how small everything looked, be it the milk bottles, streets or cars.

HOW HAS TOURING CHANGED?

Not that much, actually. After 50-plus years in the business I still sometimes find myself going to a gig in a van with the equipment in the back and thinking: ‘Here we go again!’

HAS COVID DISRUPTED ANY TRAVEL PLANS?

You bet — I had to cancel or postpone nearly a hundred gigs last year.

MOST MEMORABLE TOUR?

Doing an 85-show tour with Alice Cooper called ‘Welcome To My Nightmare!’ was a bit like Groundhog Day — you just have to get into the rhythm of the road.

ANY CELEB TRAVEL ENCOUNTERS?

I once brushed past Kris Kristofferson on a plane. When I got back to my seat I said to my band ‘Oh my God — what a cutie pie’ and he was right behind me. It was so embarrassing . . .

WHERE NEXT?

I’m booked to tour in May, so fingers crossed — I’m really missing being on stage.

DREAM DESTINATION?

I’m looking forward to visiting my sisters who live in Colorado and Texas — it’s way too long since I’ve seen them.

  • Suzi’s new album, The Devil In Me (Steamhammer/SPV), is released on March 26 (suziquatro.com).
