Dr Stephen Murray (pictured) penned a 900-word story about a step-father grooming two children and has been sentenced to a three-year good behaviour bond

A doctor and nurse who were caught texting about having sex with children while they were passengers on a plane have both walked free from court.

Dr Stephen Peter Menzies Murray, 58, and registered nurse Helen Constant, 43, were sentenced in Rockhampton District Court on Tuesday for the offending which took place when they were flying from Prince Edward Island while on holiday in Canada in October, 2018.

A passenger witnessed the texts between Queensland doctor Murray and his girlfriend Constant – where Murray was referred to as ‘sir’ and Constant as ‘slave’.

In a separate 900-word story saved in Murray’s notes on his iPhone, he wrote a story about a stepfather grooming two girls, titled ‘I get aroused by very young girls’, The Courier-Mail reported.

The story described the father getting the girls drunk and engaging in sexual activity with an 11-year-old at her birthday party.

Part of a text message seen by the witness on the plane read: ‘her little legs were spread wide’.

The messages described sexual activity between a man and an 11 or 12-year-old girl as well as a child between five and eight years old.

The passenger reported the messages and Murray was arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and it was later revealed Constant had been involved.

Police searched the homes of Murray and Constant in Queensland.

Ten child exploitation material images were found in Murray’s home of two teenage girls in little clothing, and an iPhone and iPad were found in Constant’s home.

Murray pleaded guilty to one count of producing child exploitation material between October 2017 and May 2018.

He also pleaded guilty to possessing child exploitation material in November 2018, and producing it while he was overseas in December 2019.

Constant pleaded guilty to one count of producing child exploitation material between October, 2017 and May, 2018.

Murray’s barrister Jeffrey Hunter said his client had bipolar disorder that he was diagnosed with in 2010.

Mr Hunter said Murray had grown up in an abusive home at the hands of his ‘narcissistic mother’ while his stepfather also participated.

Both Murray and Constant said they were unaware the messages were illegal.

Murray had been allowed to continue working at his practice before his sentencing but was not allowed to treat patients under 18.

Constant lost her job working at an aged care facility after the offending and was diagnosed with depression, anxiety and high functioning autism.

Her barrister Jordan Ahlstrand said the messages were not intended to be read.

Murray was sentenced to a three-year good behaviour bond and 18 months probation. He was also ordered to pay $1000.

Constant was sentenced to 12 months probation and no convictions were recorded for either.
