Romania – Factors to watch on Nov. 6

Nov 6 (Reuters) – Here are news stories, press reports and events to watch which may affect Romanian financial markets on Monday.

DEBT TENDER

Debt managers plan to sell 300 million lei ($75.84 million)worth of April 2024 treasury bonds.

TAXES

Romania’s government holds a meeting at which it could approve a fiscal overhaul due to take effect on Jan. 1, 2018.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis urged the government on Thursday to reconsider a planned overhaul of taxes that he said could hurt the economy and risked breaching the European Union’s rules on budget deficits.

A major trade union representing public and private sector employees meanwhile said it planned to call a general strike. Economists and investors have also expressed concerns about the measures.

CEE MARKETS

Central European government bond yields fell on Friday after the British and Czech central banks signalled a slower-than-expected pace of policy tightening ahead and a centrist was nominated as the next head of the U.S. Federal Reserve.

PROTESTS

Thousands of Romanians were protesting in the capital Bucharest and cities across the country on Sunday against plans by the ruling Social Democrats to overhaul judicial legislation.

The plans, initially announced by the justice minister in August and currently in under debate in parliament, could put the judicial system under political control in one of the European Union’s most corrupt states.
