Ronan Farrow mocks NBC with Weinstein expose photo

Journalist Ronan Farrow mocked NBC News for refusing to run his expose on the sexual misconduct allegations against Harvey Weinstein by releasing a still photo from one of his on-camera interviews.

‘Thankful for the women and men who have come forward with painful stories and helped to chip away at a culture of silence. When I sat down for this interview almost a year ago, the world was a different place,’ he wrote as a caption on Thursday.

Farrow says he brought the story to producers in August – months before The New York Times broke their story in October on the accusations of sexual harassment and assault against the movie mogul.

However, he was reportedly told by NBC News executives that he didn’t have enough reporting to go on air, leading to the network missing the chance to break the story first.

This is the first frame’ of any of Farrow’s sit-down interviews with Weinstein accusers that has been seen publicly, according to Fox News.

Last month the HuffPost reported that ‘NBC tried to put a stop’ to an interview by saying the story was ‘not reportable’.

The network insisted he not use an NBC News crew for the interview so Farrow ‘wound up paying out of his own pocket for a camera crew to film an interview.’

The woman in Farrow’s photo appears to be actress Rose McGowan who sat down for an on-camera interview where she accused Weinstein of rape.

Ultimately, McGowan withdrew her permission for NBC News to use the footage after she’d received legal threats from Weinstein.

Eventually Farrow took his story to The New Yorker, an outlet that the journalist says ‘immediately’ realized his story was reportable.

Farrow made an appearance on ABC’s Good Morning America on Tuesday to discuss his latest Weinstein bombshell, which details secret settlements the disgraced producer used to hide harassment claims. His report was published by The New Yorker but not on any NBC News publication.

Farrow’s employment contract with NBC has reportedly expired, though he continues to identify himself as an NBC reporter for NBC’s Today show on his Twitter bio.

He is reportedly freelance now and no longer exclusive to NBC, making his appearance on GMA a slap in the face to NBC executives.

Oppenheim has denied that the network was trying to cover for Weinstein and said last month that the ‘incredible story’ Farrow published in The New Yorker was ‘not the story that we were looking at when we made our judgment several months ago’.
