As golfers compete in the second tournament of the FedEx Cup playoffs, there is very little room for jokes or brevity, as Rory McIlroy proved in the third round of the BMW Championship.

On the par-3 15th hole, McIlroy was lining up his put when a fan from the crowd tossed a remote-controlled golf ball on the green.

McIlroy stared the fan down as the ball began to move all around the green near the cup.

The Northern Irishman was able to stop the ball with his putter before it continued to move, with McIlroy continuing to poke at it.

Finally, having had enough, McIlroy picked the ball up and threw it into a nearby pond, which was met with both cheers and boos.

Cameras then panned to show a man aside the green barking at McIlroy and talking to him – seeming to be the fan who put the ball on there in the first place.

Caddies and security guards quickly led the fan away who gestured to the crowd on his way out.

McIlroy went on to miss his birdie put that hole, but finished with a 70 for the round and is only five shots back of tournament leader Patrick Cantlay.
