Tragic schoolgirl, 7, who was killed by a reversing caravan in a freak camping accident is remembered for ‘making the world a kinder and better place’

A young girl who died in a road accident has been remembered for her deep love and care for people and animals.
Rose McMahon, seven, was fatally struck by a reversing caravan at the Tidal River Campground in the Wilsons Promontory National Park, 240km southeast of Melbourne, on October 10.
Rose lived with her family in Drouin, Gippsland and her loved ones say they are now vowing to carry on her mission to ‘make the world a better and kinder place’.
A GoFundMe page has since been set up to fund community initiatives across the Baw Baw Shire and the Wilsons Promontory park, with plans for a tree planting day to be set up.
‘Rose, took great pleasure in meeting and getting to know people, planting trees, spending time in the bush and doting on animals,’ the family said of the nature lover.

‘She especially loved Drouin’s many local birds and was keen to do what she could to protect their habitat.
‘It is our hope that our family continues her mission to make the world a better and kinder place.’
Rose had been in Year 2 at St Ita’s Primary School with staff describing the seven-year-old as a ‘bubbly and articulate’ student.
‘She was a wonderful friend, classmate and student who will be fondly remembered, and sadly missed by all who knew her,’ the school said.
Just one day before the accident, Rose had been planting trees with her family near the Tidal River as part of a regeneration project, emphasising the deep love she had for the environment.
St Ita’s Principal Andrew Osler told the Warragul and Drouin Gazette the school was now planning to build a friendship bench in honour of Rose.
‘Rose had a genuine love of learning and school life. She was a bubbly, articulate and thoughtful student who always found the good and the positive in any person or situation,’ Mr Osler said.
A rose bush will also be planted at the school in memory of the seven-year-old.

Stephanie Martens, a teacher from another local school who knew Rose, said she was very mature for her young age.
‘She especially loved picking all the flowers off the camellia bushes – even the half-dead brown ones – and she would carry them around in her pockets, giving them out to all her friends,’ she said.

The seven-year-old was also a beloved member of the Drouin Dragons Under 8s soccer team.
Coaches Richard and Kristine van Ruiten said the little girl had the ‘best smile’, and always showed respect for her teammates and others around her.
‘She especially loved nuggets and chips for dinner with her teammates on Thursday nights. It was an honour to be her coach,’ the pair said on Facebook.
The football club is now working to arrange a Rose McMahon day where residents can help regenerate the scrub around the Bellbird Park.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident.
