Police have been told there were numerous people involved in the fight, with many last seen running west along nearby Myers Street.

Superintendent Sheridan Waldau said that the scene was ‘highly emotive’ with the victims family arriving to find their loved one dead.

‘It’s very shocking, it’s a tragic event,’ she said in a statement.

‘We have a 24-year-old very young man who is deceased.

‘It obviously has major impacts on his family and friends, and we want to know the reasons why this happened.’

‘We know that there were a number of people there at the time,’ she continued.

‘We know that they know what happened and the reasons that it happened and we’re appealing for those people to come forward.’

Police believe a fight broke out between two groups, but it was not gang related.

‘We do not believe it’s a random attack,’ she said.

‘We believe these two groups may have been known to each other.’

The superintendent added it was ‘obviously a very concerning event’ that the death happened in a family park.

‘We know that there were a number of people there at the time and we know that they know what happened,’ she said on Friday.

‘We are appealing for those people to come forward and give us that information so that we can have a clearer picture as to what has happened.’

Emergency services were called to the scene on Thursday night with paramedics attempting to revive the man before he died.

A passenger in a passing car captured footage of police at the scene showing officers standing over a body resting near a playground.

A woman said she had heard a fight unfold in the lead-up to the stabbing.

‘I heard a fight and a man scream out “help, no stop!” and that was it,’ she wrote on Facebook.

‘There was a blanket or body bag looked like at the basketball court.’

Anyone with information on the incident has been urged to contact Campsie Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
