Roy Keane insisted that Manchester United need to ‘be more consistent’ after their disappointing performance against Tottenham.

The Red Devils were held to a 2-2 draw with Ange Postecoglou’s side and twice held the lead on the night but only walked away with a point after goals from Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur.

While Erik ten Hag’s didn’t lose the match, some were left feeling it was an underwhelming performance from the hosts after a bright start to the game.

Speaking after the match, on Sky Sports, former United stars Keane and Gary Neville questioned the ten Hag’s ‘playing style’.

Keane said: ‘I think we turn up for games and you watch United and you don’t know what you’re going to get.

‘When you come watch Man United, it doesn’t mean you’re going to win every week but you’d like to see something that’s going to be more consistent, but this United team, you haven’t got a clue what you’re going to get!

Neville agreed, as he said: ‘I am a little bit worried about the lack of combination and patterns of play and lack of consistency in performance.

‘Because I think when you’re in difficult moments in games, you have to rely upon something to get you through it.

‘It isn’t an excuse to say that players have missed [games] because that pattern of playing style goes into the squad. You can see that with other teams that have our players missing’.

As pressure grows on Erik ten Hag, who was watched by Sir Jim Ratcliffe for the first time at Old Trafford, Neville questioned the Dutchman’s tactics.

‘This is a guy I am scratching my head a little bit because this is a guy who’s coached with Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich who’s done the job that he did it with patterns of play and combinations and really fluid football,’ Neville said.

‘But then said, in an interview I think before Christmas or a month or so before Christmas, he couldn’t deliver the Ajax football at Manchester United.

‘And I don’t get that because I actually such a sort of embedded way of playing this style of play.

‘But when Louis van Gaal came here – and I wasn’t a great fan of Louis Van Gaal’s football – he was able to play a real distinct style of play, that some didn’t like and some did like, but you could never argue that he didn’t deliver a style of play’.
