Roy Keane spotted in the crowd as Man United legend watches hometown club Cork City clinch First Division title in Ireland

Roy Keane was spotted in attendance as his local team Cork City were crowned First Division champions in Ireland on Friday night.

The former Man United and Republic of Ireland captain grew up in Cork and has spoken of his love of the city.

Keane has been seen on several occasions in the past watching Cork City on his return trips to Ireland, as he juggles punditry work in England.

He has previously spoken of his trips back home, revealing in 2022 he liked to go back every couple of weeks. 

‘I definitely get back every three weeks for a few days,’ Keane said.

‘There’s always reasons to get back and I’m very lucky with the work I’ve got a bit of freedom and I can kind of duck and dive and get back to Ireland whenever I please which is quite regular.’

His attendance on Friday night came with Cork playing their final match of the season against Wexford.

Cork were already assured promotion to the League of Ireland Premier Division having comfortably secured the title ahead of the match.

Keane was among the 4,268 present as Cork completed an unbeaten home season in the league at Turners Cross.

Tim Clancy’s side cruised to a 6-0 win over Wexford with Ruairi Keating, Sean Maguire, Cian Bargary and Malik Dijksteel among the scorers.

Cathal O’Sullivan also netted a brace for the hosts.

The First Division trophy was presented post-match, the second time in three years Cork City have been promoted First Division winners.

Keane previously revealed he likes to travel home to Cork every few weeks for a few days

The Rebel Army finished the season unbeaten at home and won the league by 22 points

The club, nicknamed the Rebel Army, had suffered relegation on their return to the top flight last season. 

Cork have finished the season on 78 points, finishing 22 points clear of their nearest challengers UCD.

The dominant campaign has seen Cork win 22 matches, draw 12 and lose just two, both of which came on the road.

Keane had actually signed for Cork at the start of his football career, before signing for another Irish club Cobh Ramblers just three days later.

He was then signed by Nottingham Forest from Cobh, with the midfielder ultimately moving on to Man United.
