A ticked off Ruben Amorim warned his Manchester United players that they are going nowhere fast if they don’t fix their woes in front of goals.

United were the better side for much of this drab display against Wolves, which the away side eventually one with their first shot on target from Pablo Sarabia.

Rasmus Hojlund spurned two glorious opportunities to end his four-month goal drought at Old Trafford, while Bruno Fernandes cut a frustrated figure after he miscued two crosses when sent on from the bench.

‘If you look at the game we were the better team but in the end it doesn’t matter,’ Amorim said.

‘If we don’t score goals nothing matters because in the end it is the result that counts, especially in these kinds of moments.

‘We create a lot of chances and we controlled the game. We blocked some good players from the opponent but then one set piece changes the game and that’s it, it’s really frustrating to end the game like this.’

Asked if this game underlined the need to land a reliable goalscorer this summer amid links to Victor Osimhen and Liam Delap, Amorim remained tightlipped.

‘We will address that in the end,’ he added. ‘Of course we have a plan and we talk about that every day but the season is not over so let’s focus on that.

‘It’s a team thing. Of course we have an idea of what this team needs but also the guys we play with, we play at least three guys in front to score goals and we have midfielders… all the team needs to score more goals and you have opportunities with the midfielders and the striker.

‘We need to improve as a team because if you don’t score goals in this league it’s impossible to win games.’

A lot of the frustration from United fans was directed at Hojlund, particularly after he failed to convert Alejandro Garnacho’s left-wing cross on the slide from a couple of yards out.

The Dane has managed just one goal in the last 29 hours, 28 minutes but taking him out of the firing line is now how Amorim predicts his form can turn.

‘Our team should score more goals, it’s not just Rasmus missing chances,’ he said.

‘The only way I know [to help him] is to work on him and show him the videos.

‘Like you said he needs to score a goal and he won’t score if he is out [of the team] so I try to manage that during games. He needs to score, that’s all, like a striker needs.’

United have one more league goal away to Bournemouth before they travel out to Spain to face Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie.
