A runaway bull clattered into a woman carrying her shopping as it made a desperate bid for freedom after escaping an auction in South Africa.

The terrified woman was poleaxed at the side of a road in Standerton, south-east of Johannesburg, as the rampaging animal headed for the hills.

CCTV footage shows the bull charging at several bystanders outside a KFC before slamming straight into the woman, sending her sprawling.

The bull was eventually captured and returned to the auction site more than half a mile away, while the woman was not badly injured.

Pedestrians looked terrified as they spotted the one-ton beast charging from the road into the car park by the KFC.

One bystander took cover behind a car as the bull charged towards them, before it changed course and headed after another man, who hurried away.

The woman carrying her shopping had not yet noticed the bull and continued walking calmly out of the car park.

After another person had fled to safety, the animal turned on the woman, who suddenly noticed what was happening and tried desperately to get out of its way.

But she was too late, and the angry beast hit her hard on the backside, throwing her to the ground as the animal ran right over her and back to the road.

Although dazed, the woman did not seem badly hurt as she staggered back to her feet only seconds later.

Passers-by helped her gather up her shopping bags and asked if she needed a doctor.

A witness said: ‘The woman said she heard someone shout ‘run’ and looked round and just saw these horns coming at her but she was too late to run.

‘She said she was very sore but just wanted to get home in case it came back again’ he said.

The CCTV footage was taken from a KFC camera and has gone viral after being shared on the website News, Accidents, Robberies & Incidents.

Standerton police spokesperson Captain Johannes Fani Nhlabathi said the bull had been chasing people and causing chaos after escaping from auction about half a mile away away.

He said: ‘The KFC manager who filmed the incident said the woman was shaken up but fine and didn’t need any treatment and the bull as recaptured and taken back for auction’.
