Runway horror at Manchester airport as air-side driver ‘breaks both legs’ in smash between his plane tug and catering truck

A Manchester Airport worker has been taken to hospital after the plane-towing vehicle he was driving crashed into a catering truck.

The driver was left ‘trapped’ in the crushed tug and ‘broke both legs’ in the ‘horrific’ collision on Sunday afternoon.

Manchester Airport are investigating the incident and a spokesperson said the Aviator employee’s condition is not thought to be life threatening.

An airport worker told the Manchester Evening News: ‘A tug drove past us and smashed into an Alpha food truck.

‘He ended up hitting the corner full on. The tug’s cab ended up underneath the Alpha’s cab.

‘The man driving the tug was trapped with one leg badly injured. I’m pretty sure he will have lost it.’

An air ambulance along with the fire service were reportedly on hand as well as police following the incident.

The source added that the driver was cut out from the vehicle and ‘broke both legs’.

A Manchester Airport spokesman added: ‘We are aware of an accident on the airfield involving an Aviator employee. He has been taken to hospital and an investigation will now take place.’

It’s the second crash on the airfield in the last year with after an aircraft crashed into a catering truck in September. 

A hole was left in the side of the vehicle and passengers felt a small jolt.
