A woman has plunged eight storeys to her death after throwing her dog out of a window, according to witnesses.

The horror incident unfolded at an apartment block in Sydney’s CBD at about 3pm on Thursday, sparking peak hour traffic chaos.

Police and paramedics rushed to the scene following reports the woman had fallen from a balcony overlooking a lane off a Barangaroo street.

Officers established a crime scene and a spokesperson from NSW Police told Daily Mail Australia the incident is believed to be a case of self-harm.

Residents at the back of the 22-storey apartment block overlooked the grisly scene, with clothing seen strewn over the footpath.

‘I’ve lived here for three years but I don’t know who the woman was,’ one witness said.

‘It’s always been a quiet apartment. We didn’t hear any disturbances beforehand.’

Another resident said: ‘We saw a pair of shoes lying in the lane and she was apparently wearing a bathrobe when she fell.’

Police cordoned off the block with tape and officers were seen letting residents who live in nearby buildings through one at a time.

Several officers were seen guarding the front and rear entrance to the building.
