Russia will be prevented from building a new embassy near Parliament House in Canberra over national security concerns.

The government will rush legislation into parliament with the backing of the opposition to block the move.

‘The government has received very clear security advice as to the risk presented by a new Russian presence so close to Parliament House and we are acting quickly to ensure the leased site does not become a formal diplomatic presence,’ Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters on Thursday.
