Ryan Gosling jokes he struggles to follow daughters ‘complicated backstories’ for Barbie dolls

Ryan Gosling spilled on being a ‘Barbie dad’ and humorously revealed that he has difficultly keeping up with his two daughters’ dolls due to their ‘complicated backstories.’

The Barbie star, 42, who put on a stylish display in a blue suit during a Toronto press conference, opened up about Barbie playtime with his daughters, Esmeralda, eight, and Amada, seven, while talking to ET Canada at the event on Thursday.

When asked by the interviewer if he was a ‘good Barbie dad’ and if he can role-play with the dolls, The Notebook actor explained, ‘Well, you have to know, my kids, their Barbies aren’t even named Barbie.’

He added, ‘They all have their own names, very complicated lives, backstories, interrelationships, history, you gotta know it all.’

The Golden Globe winner, who tackles the role of Ken in the upcoming live-action Barbie movie, then gave the example that if he began playing with dolls that were ‘estranged now’ but wasn’t aware, ‘it’s like, “Get out of here.”‘

Being a Barbie dad: Ryan Gosling, 42, humorously revealed to ET Canada that he has difficultly keeping up with his two daughters Barbie dolls and their rather ‘complicated backstories’; seen in June in Toronto

‘They don’t even talk!’ he continued, while bringing up their Ken doll and hilariously stated that in his daughters’ Barbie world, ‘He works at a grocery store, he’s not a fireman…,’ and adamantly repeated, ‘You gotta know.’

Ryan attended the star-studded Toronto press conference alongside other fellow castmates, including Simu Liu, and he was accompanied by his sister Mandi Gosling for the festivities as he briefly returned to his home country of Canada.

During the ET Canada interview, the star discussed tackling the role of Ken and finding his ‘Kenergy’ (Ken + Energy), with his sister cutting in to state, ‘It felt like such a no-brainer to me… Like, of course he’s Ken!’

She sweetly turned to her brother and told him, ‘You had to look for the Kenergy, but I always knew it was there.’ He responded with, ‘Wow, that’s beautiful. Thanks.’

Gosling then explained that, ‘Well, she’s my original Barbie,’ tilting his head towards Mandi, who quickly explained that she had ‘never owned a Barbie.’

The Gray Man actor expressed, ‘Because she was too busy being Barbie. She was doing all the things all the time. You know, getting me to school safely and then she was the president of that school. She had more meetings than classes.’

‘It was Barbie land. When I got to set I was like, “This is just like my house,”’ he humorously added.

Ryan shares his two daughters with fellow actress and longtime partner Eva Mendes, whom he first met on set of The Place Beyond The Pines. The lovebirds officially began dating in 2011 and have been inseparable since.

During an interview with GQ, Ryan talked about parenthood with Mendes, and sweetly gushed that before meeting Eva, ‘I was looking for her, you know?’ and added that ‘it all makes sense now.’

He also revealed that when he hits an obstacle when it comes to parenting, ‘I just lean on Eva. She knows what’s important, always. She just somehow knows. So if ever I’m in my head about it, I just ask her.’

Gosling admitted that before meeting the Hitch actress, ‘I wasn’t thinking about kids,’ but, ‘after I met Eva, I realized that I just didn’t want to have kids without her.’

The La La Land star continued, ‘And there were moments on The Place Beyond The Pines here we were pretending to be a family, and I didn’t really want it to be pretend anymore. I realized that this would be a life I would be really lucky to have.’

He also revealed that his daughters Barbie dolls, including Ken, also played a part in him taking on the role in Greta Gerwig’s project.

Ryan referenced to their Ken doll and recalled, ‘I did see him, like, face down in the mud outside one day, next to a squished lemon… and it was like, This guy’s story does need to be told, you know?’

The happy couple notably remain private about their personal lives and their children.

Back in 2020, Eva penned on Instagram, per People, ‘I have always had a clear boundary when it comes to my man and my kids. I’ll talk about them of course, with limits, but I won’t post pictures of our daily life.’

‘Since my children are still so little and don’t understand what posting their image really means, I don’t have their consent. And I won’t post their image until they’re old enough to give me consent.’

With the Barbie movie slated to premiere in theaters later this month on July 21, press events are in full swing to promote the film, which is directed by Greta Gerwig.

Last week, Margot Robbie, who tackles the leading role of Barbie and also is one of the movie’s producers, donned a pink and white polka dot outfit to kick off the start of the global press tour.

While Ryan and Simu were spotted in Toronto on Thursday, Margot and Greta whisked themselves away to Sydney, Australia for a special fan event.

Gerwig, who is known for directing past films such as Little Women (2019) and Lady Bird (2017), not only took on the role as director of the upcoming fantasy comedy, but also co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach.

The Barbie movie not only stars Margot, but also Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Will Ferrell, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Simu Liu, Michael Cera and Dua Lipa. Various versions of both the Barbie and Ken dolls will be portrayed, with actress Helen Mirren narrating the film.

Ahead of the film’s official release, the first review has just hit newsstands. Time Magazine’s Eliana Dockterman praised the performances of Margot and Ryan, writing that the movie is a ‘fun yet self-aware romp with shades of Clueless and Legally Blonde.’

‘Both Barbie and Ken go on quests of self-discovery, and that’s when things get really interesting,’ she wrote, adding, ‘Ryan Gosling nearly steals the show.’

The review also called the film’s musical numbers a cross between ‘Grease and Singin’ in the Rain.’
