NFL star Ryan Kelly and his wife Emma have announced the happy news that they are are expecting twin boys, sharing their ‘miracle’ with the world after surviving the ‘unsurvivable’ death of their daughter.
Emma suffered a miscarriage 19 weeks into her pregnancy two years ago, losing a little girl named Mary Kate in 2021.
The couple’s ‘bittersweet’ pregnancy announcement comes after a grueling journey through in vitro fertilization that was ‘heartbreaking.’
Speaking to PEOPLE, Ryan and Emma opened up about the tragic loss of their daughter and the joyous news that they will soon be parents.
‘My gratitude, I can’t even tell you,’ said Emma, 33. ‘There was a time when I really wasn’t sure if we were going to get here. I am literally so grateful for each day.’

Emma recently passed the halfway mark with her twins – a ‘bittersweet’ milestone that summons a great deal of emotion, since she was 19 weeks into her first pregnancy when they learned that their daughter’s ‘little heart just stopped for reasons unknown.’
‘There’s a lot of emotion involved right now with just surpassing that bittersweet milestone. And now, making it further than ever,’ Emma told the publication.
Speaking about the immediate aftermath of her miscarriage, she said: ‘I remember after delivering her, sitting in the hospital bed and they took her from me, and I was just like, “I can’t live like this.” The emptiness of it, I remember feeling so broken.’
Ryan spoke candidly about how sharing their painful story with the world eventually helped them to grieve and heal.
‘We felt like the only ones out there,’ he said, ‘but then you hear people’s stories and it helped us tell ours and keep our daughter’s name alive, to honor her in a sense. It definitely helped our healing.’
The Indianapolis Colts center, 29, and his beloved wife have ‘always wanted to be parents,’ and never lost hope even though they were faced with ‘heartbreaking’ infertility struggles.’
‘I knew at that moment, nothing could ever replace our daughter, but I knew we wanted to grow our family,’ said Emma.
She went on to say: ‘…It’s really painful when you want it, and you’re trying so hard and doing everything right, and seeing so many doctors and professionals. Then month after month, it’s negative pregnancy test after negative pregnancy test, after already losing a child that you wanted so badly.’

Survivors: ‘I’m so proud of us and our relationship,’ said Emma, announcing her joyous pregnancy to PEOPLE and gushing about her two-year marriage to Kelly. ‘I literally feel like we just survived the unsurvivable’
Staying strong: The future parents are trying to enjoy this pregnancy as much as they can, even though there is ‘no safe period.’ Emma said: ‘I just want our boys to get here alive’
Recalling more emotions from the ‘darkest’ time of her life, Emma said that all she felt was ‘shame’ over not being able to conceive and she also admitted that there is still ‘anxiety and pain’ stemming from her first pregnancy.
‘There’s a PTSD to it,’ explained Emma, adding that she is trying to ‘feel the joy and excitement.
‘I’m so proud of us and our relationship,’ she said of her two-year marriage to Kelly. ‘I literally feel like we just survived the unsurvivable.’
The future parents are trying to enjoy this pregnancy as much as they can, even though there is ‘no safe period.’ Concluding her interview, Emma said: ‘I just want our boys to get here alive.’
