Ryan Reynolds hangs on Sir Alex Ferguson in video announcing Wrexham’s game against Man United

Ryan Reynolds HANGS UP on Sir Alex Ferguson in awkward video call with the Manchester United legend as he and Rob McElhenney announce Wrexham’s preseason game against the Red Devils in the US

Wrexham has set up its most high-profile match since being bought by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and to celebrate Sir Alex Ferguson was the centerpiece of an amusing promotional video.

The July 25 match was announced on Monday by both teams Monday and will take place at Snapdragon Stadium and will see United field a team of mostly young players against Wrexham.

‘We’re looking forward to being able to play in the United States for the first time in the Club’s history,’ the Welsh club tweeted.

‘The match against Manchester United is sure to be a memorable occasion at the Snapdragon Stadium, San Diego.’

Reynolds and McElhenney, who completed a $2.5 million takeover of Wrexham in November 2020, took part in video with Ferguson – United’s managerial great – posted to social media earlier Monday.

The skit shows the two Wrexham owners waiting anxiously to have a video call with the Red Devils legend to discuss the pre-season game.

‘I can’t believe we’re about to talk with the Sir Alex Ferguson, arguably the greatest football manager ever,’ McElhenney said. ‘He’s won 13 Premier League titles.’

Both McElhenney and Reynolds express their excitement to the managerial great but Ferguson seemingly blanks them.

After a few nervous and awkward silences, the Hollywood stars suggest how the fans of both Wrexham and Manchester United will enjoy the occasion but Ferguson once again responds with silence.

The awkward tension clearly gets too much for Reynolds as the Deadpool star then suggests Ferguson is ‘living in [their] heads rent free’ before making up an excuse to hang up.

‘Sir Alex, we would love to talk more about the big match happening at SnapDragon Stadium in San Diego on July 25th,’ he says, ‘but Rob here has a hair appointment in Beverly Hills. He has to get it to it right now, so the schedule is inflexible for that. So thank you sir, we appreciate you. Bye!’

Reynolds hangs up the call while McElhenney protests the excuse, before adding the experience was terrifying.

The clip then cuts to Ferguson sipping a tea in his office as he is asked how the call with Wrexham’s owners went. He responds: ‘They were on mute. Never heard a thing.’

Wrexham will hope to have been promoted to the fourth tier of English soccer by the time the game is played. It is leading the fifth-tier National League.

The fly-on-the-wall ‘Welcome To Wrexham’ documentary on FX has given the club a global profile, and participating in TST is seen as an opportunity to continue that.

Both Reynolds and McElhenney have been named in club’s initial squad for a seven-a-side tournament due to take place this summer in the US.

Wrexham have signed up to play in The Soccer Tournament, a winner-takes-all tournament in Cary, North Carolina from June 1-4 with 32 teams competing for a $1million prize.

The Dragons confirmed their participation earlier this month, joining a field that already includes former Fulham and Tottenham midfielder Clint Dempsey’s Team Dempsey, Hashtag United, Liga MX side Club Nexaca and US Women, made up of former United States internationals.
