Ryanair boss Michael O’Leary has said he would be ‘happy’ to introduce a two-drink limit on his company’s flights, as long as the same rules are applied to airport bars.

O’Leary admitted that the budget airline saw a ‘spike’ of violent disorder among its passengers over the summer, adding that flights to party hotspot Ibiza were often the rowdiest.

He told Sky News that would be ‘happy to [introduce the limit] tomorrow.’

‘If the price of putting a drink limit on the airport, where the problem is being created, is putting a drink limit on board the aircraft, we’ve no problem with that.

‘The real issue is how do we stop these people getting drunk at airports particularly as, like this summer, we’ve had a huge spike in air traffic control delays.

‘They’re getting on board with too much alcohol in their system. If we identify them as being drunk on board, we don’t serve them alcohol. But that doesn’t solve the problem.’

On Sunday, a flight to Ibiza from Manchester was diverted to Toulouse, France, after a drunk Brit swigged vodka, hit flight attendants and spat at customers.

The man and his wife, neither of whom have yet been named, were dragged off at 5:30pm on Sunday.  The couple were sat about 10 rows apart and the man spent the first hour of the flight ‘swigging duty free vodka’, according to a witness.

A passenger said the man began arguing with a male cabin crew member and punched him in the face.

He then started ‘kicking off’ and the passenger described the drunk man as ‘out of control’.

Attendants reportedly warned him the plane would be diverted if he didn’t calm down, and he replied ‘I don’t give a f***’.

The drunk Brit assaulted another passenger and spat at a woman as he was restrained in the disturbing incident which lasted around 40 minutes.

But after he left the plane, his partner started harassing another passenger, hitting and shouting at him.

Police physically restrained the woman, who was barefoot, before removing her too.

The Ryanair flight spent just over an hour and a half on the tarmac before resuming the journey to Ibiza.

A Ryanair spokesperson said at the time: ‘This flight from Manchester to Ibiza diverted to Toulouse after a small group of passengers became disruptive inflight.

‘The crew called ahead for police assistance, who met the aircraft upon landing at Toulouse and offloaded two passengers before this flight continued to Ibiza.

‘We sincerely apologise to passengers for any inconvenience caused as a result of these unruly passengers’ behaviour, which was beyond Ryanair’s control.

‘This is now a matter for local police.’
