Saint-Etienne have been left frustrated by Arsenal after failing to bring back William Saliba on loan this summer as the tension between the two sides continues.
The 19-year-old central defender was heavily linked with another loan move to the French club after playing there last season on a temporary deal.
But a switch failed to materialise before the transfer window closed on Monday night. Saint-Etienne have been left unhappy by the Gunners for allowing Saliba’s proposed loan move to fall through despite having a deal agreed ‘long before the transfer window closed’.
Saint-Etienne have been left frustrated by Arsenal after failing to seal William Saliba on loan
‘Long before the transfer window closed, AS Saint-Etienne had reached an agreement with William Saliba and accepted Arsenal’s offer for a one-season loan,’ a statement on the French outfit’s official website read.
‘Unfortunately, all the administrative conditions could not be met in time, in England, for the completion of the deal.
‘The disappointment is great for ASSE and William Saliba, who was particularly determined to return to a club where he has flourished.’

Saliba joined Arsenal from Saint-Etienne last summer in a £27million move but he re-joined the Ligue 1 side on a season-long loan and was part of the team that reached the French Cup final.
The Gunners were involved in an extraordinary public row with Saint-Etienne in July after the French club refused to abide by Arsenal’s medical plan for Saliba.
Saint-Etienne faced Paris Saint-Germain in the Coupe de France final on July 24 but both clubs failed to reach an agreement for Saliba to feature.
The French side slammed Arsenal in a statement for an ‘unacceptable’ U-turn.
Saliba joined Arsenal from Saint-Etienne last summer in £27million move but went out on loan
It read: ‘Saint-Etienne, which simply wanted the extension of the loan until July 24, could not find an agreement with Arsenal to allow the defender to prepare and play this meeting, the English club imposing unacceptable sports and financial conditions.’
The Gunners hit back and said they were surprised an agreement could not be reached.
The statement read: ‘Throughout our discussions with Saint-Etienne, our aim has been to protect the welfare of William Saliba as well as the interests of Arsenal Football Club, while honouring the terms of the loan.
The Gunners were involved in an extraordinary public row with St Etienne over player in July
‘Despite the loan ending on June 30, we were willing to find a way for William to play in the [French] cup final on July 24, despite having no contractual obligation to do so. As William is returning from injury, we asked that Saint-Etienne follow a clear training plan with William in close collaboration with us, to ensure he is fully fit for the start of next season.
‘To our surprise we were unable to reach agreement to this plan which was proposed by our medical experts, and we are simply not prepared to risk the welfare of an Arsenal player.
‘While it was not our primary concern, and ultimately not relevant as our training plan was not accepted, we also expected not to be financially disadvantaged by extending the loan.
‘This was also not acceptable to Saint-Etienne. We know this is a disappointment for William but he understands we are working to protect his long-term interests and those of Arsenal.’
Saliba is yet to make an appearance for Mikel Arteta’s side this season.
