Officers claimed a driver who crashed with a car full of passengers was banned for 80 years despite him only being disqualified until 2019.
Footage shows the shocking moment Mohammed Ahsan, 20, from Coventry, ploughed into a marble bench following a police chase in Salford, Greater Manchester.
But after he was sentenced on September 1, police Tweeted that he was disqualified until 2097.
Police made the bizarre claim that Mr Ahsan had been banned for eight decades before Tweeting this to back up their assertion
Mr Ahsan from Coventry was banned from driving after ploughing into a marble bench following a police chase
After announcing the enormous ban, GMP Traffic later doubled down on the claim, writing: ‘It wasnt a typo ! He is actually banned for 80 years!’
Astonishing footage shows the car speeding round the corner of a road in Salford before crashing into a marble bench.
The blue lights of the police cars then make their way round the corner as smoke billows from vehicle.
Ahsan failed to stop for police because there were six people in the car, more than legally allowed.
He was summoned to court and found guilty on September 1 for dangerous driving at Manchester Magistrates’ Court.
As well as his 80-year ban, he was handed a 16-week suspended prison sentence and fines.
The driver panicked and refused to stop for police because he had more passengers than are legally allowed in his car
PC Matt Picton of Greater Manchester Police, said: ‘This driver panicked after having too many passengers in his vehicle.
‘He made a choice not to stop for the police and drive dangerously. There is never any excuse for this standard of driving and we will always use the full force of the law to prosecute these people to rid them from our roads.
‘Too many people die from people driving dangerous and its totally unacceptable.’
The driver and front seat passenger suffered minor injuries.
Effective lifetime bans from the roads are rare but can be imposed if the courts consider the driver to be a threat to others.
