‘Salon-quality’ People Haircare range from Coles is just as good as more expensive brands

‘Salon-quality’ haircare range you can buy from the supermarket sells a $16 BOTTLE a minute – but does it stack up to more expensive brands?

  • People Haircare was created by entrepreneurs Katherine Ruiz and Matt John
  • The brand is bringing salon-quality formulations and selling it at supermarkets
  • I trialed the product for a week to see if it made a difference to my dyed hair

People Haircare sells one of its $16 bottles of shampoo and conditioner every minute after launching in 800 Coles supermarkets nationwide.

It’s an astounding statistic – and a fair bit of hair washing our nation is doing – but as a self-confessed product snob I wondered if it was as good as the $44 bottles sitting in my shower that claim to hydrate, heal and bring health back to any locks.

There are four different ‘sets’ of bottles to choose from depending on your need – whether it be looking to smooth out frizz, hydrate thirsty tendrils, bring volume and bounce back to flat hair or repair damage.

There is also a $16 treatment mask to be used on damp, clean hair as a deep conditioner post hair wash.

I recently made the switch back from bleach blonde hair to my natural brunette – to save both my hair and my hard-earned cash – so I opted to try the People Repair Shampoo and Conditioner and follow it up with a spot of masking on nights I needed a little bit of extra hydration.

I’m not so worried about remedying frizz because my hair is naturally the sort of uniform dead-straight that can barely hold a curl or bouncy 90s blowout, but my ends are plenty dry where the blonde hair remains underneath.

So on an unremarkable Friday night I took to the shower to replace my usual routine with People – and to say I was surprised by the formulation would be an understatement.

I double shampooed – my usual go-to – with 20c size dollops of the product before allowing the conditioner to marinate for three minutes while I washed my face and shaved my legs.

First of all, these bottles are generously sized. We’re talking 350ml of product that could easily last me six months, if not more. My more expensive brands? You’d be lucky for 200ml in their bottles.

After the wash and rinse my hair was smoother to the touch than usual and it felt clean but not stripped of all its oils. I added a leave in conditioner to my mid-lengths and ends to help me brush it out and again, didn’t lose 5,000 hairs in that process. A miracle.

The shampoo and conditioner are soap free, plant-based by nature and vegan, with no added parabens, SLES or harsh detergents. Basically nothing that was going to make me return screaming and crying back to my $44 bottles.

After a quick air-dry and brief blow dry I couldn’t deny the level of shine left behind – and it lasted me three days before needing a re-wash – a day longer than usual.

The brand’s co-founders Katherine Ruiz and Matt John wanted their customers to get a salon-like experience but from the comfort of their own homes.

Every bottle and set was tested out on both Katherine, Matt and their team’s hair so they had a wealth of case studies to ensure their products were top notch.

‘I’ve found it frustrating that premium haircare has never been accessible through supermarkets,’ Ms Ruiz said.

‘We’ve worked with award-winning haircare brands through our branding agency Anatomy Studios™ over the years and thought to ourselves if we don’t do it, someone else will.’

People prides itself on being the best-performing haircare product in the supermarket and I have to agree with them.
