Salted camel ice cream is set to be the next big thing

A new salted caramel-flavoured ice cream is how one gelato chain is celebrating the spirit of Christmas this year.

Salted camel – a flavour which riffs on the story The Three Wise Men riding on their camels and is made with camel milk – is the latest innovation by Australian gelato masters, Gelatissimo.

The festive treat uses a combination of salted caramel gelato made with camel milk, topped with crunchy butterscotch baubles.

The camel milk comes freshly sourced from a local Hunter Valley camel farmer, and tastes a little sweeter than normal milk.

‘Australia has gone mad for rich, buttery, caramel flavours so when I first tasted camel milk, I just knew it would be the perfect ingredient to incorporate into a delectable Christmas-time flavour,’ Gelatissimo’s Product Development Manager, Filiz Kaya, said.

As well as offering a quirky take on the traditional Christmas tale, camel ice cream is perfect for the health conscious too.

It’s not only lighter in calories, it’s also loaded with nanobodies to help fight infection, Vitamins A, B2 and C, various protective proteins, and is low in fat, cholesterol and lactose.

Store owners around the country are convinced the unique flavour will be a hit.

Mooloolaba Gelatissimo’s manager Nathan Denaro told Daily Mail Australia people will come in and try it, ‘because it’s something unique and a little different’.

The ice cream flavour, which will be available in all store from this Monday, will only be on the menu for this month, but if it proves popular it could become a staple.

Last year the chain introduced a special peanut butter flavoured ‘pet friendly’ ice cream.

The ‘paw-fect’ treat was a dairy-free style gelato created for people, and their four-legged friends.

The store offered a buy-one-get-one free for those wanting to share the sweet treat with their pets.
