NRL star Sam Burgess is quitting rugby league as he continues to struggle with a serious shoulder injury.

The South Sydney forward is to announce his retirement on medical grounds at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

Burgess’ retirement will cap off a tumultuous week beginning with his second split with his wife Phoebe and her father taking out an AVO against him.

The star forward earlier held serious talks with medical specialists and his Rabbitohs team about the prospect of walking away from rugby league, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The rugby league player from West Yorkshire, England, is one of the NRL’s biggest and most marketable stars.

Last year he signed a three-year-contract worth $3.6 million that runs through 2022 and it is unclear how much of that he will receive.

He suffered the devastating injury during a round five game against the New Zealand Warriors in April.

It plagued him for the rest of the season but Souths hoped he could come through, despite fears he may never play again.

Burgess will, at least on the field, be best remembered for gutting out a broken cheekbone to lead the Rabbitohs to victory in the 2014 NRL Grand Final.

Last week Burgess was banned from going within a kilometre of his estranged wife Phoebe’s country hideout after an alleged row with her father.

Burgess was visiting his two children at the NSW southern highlands estate last Saturday when he allegedly got into an argument with Mitchell Hooke.

Mr Hooke reportedly asked the NRL superstar to leave the family’s three hectare Glenquarry farm – which Burgess did – but police were called about 5pm.

Officers filed an interim apprehended violence order (AVO) against Burgess, and court documents revealed Burgess is now barred from coming close to the home.

Burgess is also banned from coming within a kilometre of any other place where the retired mining executive lives or works.

He was also hit with standard AVO conditions which prevent him from stalking, intimidating or assaulting Phoebe’s father.

A NSW Police spokeswoman said police are investigating and ‘there are no reports of any injuries.’

Burgess is due before Moss Vale Local Court on November 6, where a magistrate could confirm the AVO or dismiss it in its entirety.

There is no suggestion Burgess did anything wrong by visiting the property.

Phoebe was not at the farm during Sam’s weekend visit. The glamour couple separated for the second time just weeks ago.

Last Sunday it was claimed that Phoebe is moving to the well-to-do Southern Highlands permanently, leaving behind the pair’s Maroubra mansion.

A source allegedly told The Daily Telegraph: ‘It makes sense as Phoebe’s support network is in Bowral. She grew up there, her mum and dad are there and her sister Jemima’.

The insider went on to say because the town is close to Sydney, Phoebe and Sam could continue to co-parent their two children.
