Sam Smith opts for modest polo top and jeans – after BRITs performance sparked 100 Ofcom complaints

They garnered over 100 Ofcom complaints after their raunchy BRITs performance on the weekend.

But taking to the streets of New York City on Wednesday, Sam Smith opted for a much more modest look.

The non-binary singer, 30, who goes by the pronouns they/them, kept a low profile as they sported a blue polo shirt with a red collar, an oversized blue blazer and matching blue jeans.

Keeping things casual, Sam paired the laidback look with brown boots and covered their eyes with a pair of shades.

With their short hair styled in highlighted spikes, they wore pearl earrings and otherwise went for an accessory-free look.

Casual: Taking to the streets of New York City on Wednesday, Sam Smith opted for a modest look

It comes after Sam performed their new hit single Unholy along with Kim Petras, 30, for the Brit Awards at London’s O2 on Saturday.

Sam performed the song dressed as the devil, complete with horns coming out of their hat, a similar look which sparked the ire of viewers at the Grammys the week before.

Moreover, two backing dancers enjoyed a snog at the end of the performance.

There were groups of other backing dancers around them who all joined in with the very sexy dance moves.

A spokesperson for Ofcom told MailOnline: ‘We received 106 complaints about The Brit Awards on ITV1 on 11 February.

‘The majority of complaints related to Sam Smith’s performance, with the remainder about the use of offensive language and consumption of alcohol.’

It comes just a week after Grammy viewers criticised Sam and Kim over their ‘satanic’ performance of Unholy.

Sam was seen wearing satanic headgear in the horror movie-inspired performance, and viewers flocked to social media to share their frustrations about the ‘demonic’ themes.

One tweeted: ‘I know we on the right probably use the word satanic too often but this performance from Sam Smith is literally a tribute to Satan.’

Another added: ‘You don’t have to be super religious to be disturbed by that Sam Smith devil-worshiping performance.’

One viewer stated: ‘That Sam Smith performance was weird I had to look away like why artists so obsessed with the devil????

‘How you go from those tributes to Sam Smith dressed as a devil?’, one viewer asked while another tweeted: ‘That devil worshipping performance was trash. And it’s been done so many times. I’m disappointed af.’

One frustrated music fan added: ‘I’m really so sick of the satanic and demonic references…even with the hypocrisy — I still wanna know WHY Nicki, Sam Smith, Lil Nas X, and so many others reference the devil.’

Another agreed as they stated: ‘So many devil horns tonight, first Sam SMITH, now Steve Lacy. Like why the satanic s**t?’

After the performance, host Trevor Noah immediately joked about the fact the satanic themes would outrage some viewers.

Pretending to be on the phone to his mother, he was heard saying: ‘No, mom, it wasn’t the actual devil… Yeah, you did warn me about Hollywood.’

As stars such as Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck laughed along, he ‘ended’ the call and stated: ‘She said she’s praying for all of us.’
