Samuel L. Jackson’s surprisingly brutal take on Oscar nominations

Samuel L. Jackson has stated that it’s not an ‘honor’ to be nominated for an Academy Award – and that ‘most people forget’ Oscar-nominated performances.

The legendary Hollywood actor, 75, didn’t hold back his thoughts ahead of awards season, with the prestigious ceremony set to take place in Los Angeles on March 2, 2025.  

‘We’ve been in the business long enough to know that when folks go, “It’s just an honor to be nominated,”‘ he said in a recent interview with Associated Press.

‘No it ain’t. It’s an honor to win.’

Not mincing his words, Jackson added that often Oscar-nominated performances were forgotten.

He continued: ‘You get nominated and folks go, “Yeah I remember that.” Or most people forget.

‘Generally, it’s a contest you didn’t volunteer to be in. I didn’t go in there so I could flex. “Let me do my scene, so you can remember who I was.”‘

Jackson added: ‘They nominate you and people go, “What is that movie you’re nominated for? What’s the name of that thing?”

‘And after it’s over and people have a hard time remembering who even won.’

Jackson’s career in the film industry has spanned well over three decades, and the movies that he has appeared in have collectively grossed more than $27 billion worldwide, making him the highest-grossing actor of all time.

Despite him being a household name, the A-lister has only been nominated for an Oscar on one occasion.

In 1994, he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction.

The gong, however, was awarded to the late actor Martin Landau for his portrayal of Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood.

Written and directed by Tarantino from a story he conceived with Roger Avary, crime film Pulp Fiction tells four intertwining tales of crime and violence in Los Angeles.

The A-lister confessed that people ‘have a hard time remembering who even won’ an Oscar 

It went on to win the Palme d’Or at the 1994 Cannes Film Festival and was a major critical and commercial success, grossing $213.9 million at the worldwide box office against a budget of between $8 million and $8.5 million. 

Last month, before the U.S. Election, Jackson said he could get behind Vice President Kamala Harris’ candidacy because they shared the same favorite curse word. 

The potty-mouthed actor didn’t actually say the expletive while on stage campaigning for Harris in a star-studded rally in Clarkston, Georgia on Thursday, but he mumbled enough of the letters for supporters to guess.

‘We’ve heard her favorite curse word is a favorite of mine too,’ he divulged. 

‘But I ain’t gonna say mothafu – that word.’

‘I don’t know about you, but that’s the kinda president I can stand behind. That’s the kinda president I could see leading our country forward,’ he said of the VP.
