The San Francisco 49ers’ takeover of Leeds United could face opposition from a middle eastern buyer, Sportsmail understands.

An agreement is in place for the NFL franchise, which already owns 44 per cent of the club, to take full control following January 2024.

That deal is thought to rely on Leeds remaining in the Premier League and is widely viewed, should that be the case, as a formality.

However, sources have disclosed that an as-yet unnamed third party has shown a shock interest in stealing a march on the 49ers and taking over at Elland Road.

In what is an intriguing situation, it remains to be seen if the group, based in the middle east, will make a serious bid. Indeed, their interest is known to be in the ‘very early’ stages.

But the news is likely to come as a shock to those at the 49ers – who have undertaken a steadily growing influence behind the scenes.

The American franchise’s investment arm, 49ers Enterprises, has shaken hands with owner Andrea Radrizzani on an option thought to be worth north of £400m, which includes ownership of Elland Road.

But there is nothing to stop a third party from entering the race, and now all eyes will be on whether that becomes the case.

Radrizzani was recently in Qatar for the duration of the World Cup. Under American Jesse Marsch, his side currently sit in 14th place, two points above the relegation zone.
