Sarah Ferguson joins Prince Andrew at memorial service for the late King of Greece – marking her most high profile royal event in decades

Sarah Ferguson was all smiles this morning as she joined Prince Andrew at the memorial service for the late King Constantine of Greece at Windsor Castle.

The Duchess of York, 64, still affectionately known to most as Fergie, was pictured arriving alongside her ex-husband, who she lives with at Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park in Berkshire.

Sporting a black fascinator and grey outfit, the mother-of-two donned a pair of elegant earrings and opted for a smattering of glamorous makeup.

They joined Queen Camilla and other Royal Family members including Princess Anne and Zara Tindall at the sombre occasion. However, the Prince of Wales has pulled out of a reading at the service for his godfather ‘for personal reasons’.

The service marks the Duchess’ most high profile royal event in decades – with the mother of Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie rarely invited to Royal Family occasions following her high profile divorce from Andrew in 1996.

It is understood that the Duke of York was attending the service as a member of the British Royal Family and had been invited by the Greek Royal Family, and today’s appearance was not an official royal engagement as such.

In December, the Duke and Duchess of York walked behind senior royals as crowds lined the road outside the St Mary Magdalene Church for the traditional Christmas Day service on the Norfolk estate.

It signalled the first time Fergie had joined the royals for the walk in 32 years, after being banned from attending the  by Prince Philip.

But King Charles softened the approach towards Prince Andrew’s former wife last year.

Elsewhere, Prince William pulled out of attending the memorial service at the last minute due to ‘personal reasons’.

Kensington Palace would not elaborate further but said the Princess of Wales, who is recovering from abdominal surgery, continues to be doing well.

William called the Greek royal family who are attending the service in St George’s Chapel to let them know he was unable to attend.

Kate is away from official royal engagements until after Easter following major surgery in January.

The King, who was close to his second cousin, the former Greek monarch, is also missing the service as he continues treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer.

Constantine II of Greece was a first cousin once removed and sailing partner of the late Duke of Edinburgh, and died at the age of 82 in January last year, decades after being toppled from the throne in a military coup.

His funeral was attended by Princess Anne, who was the late monarch’s second cousin, and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.

He became King of Greece in 1964 but was ousted from the throne when the monarchy was abolished in 1973.

Charles was unable to attend Constantine’s funeral in Athens last year because of commitments which included meeting the president of Cyprus.

Camilla and other family members were joined by the late king’s widow Queen Anne-Marie, their eldest son, Crown Prince Pavlos and other members of the Greek royal family for today’s service in the nave of the 15th century chapel.
