Sarah Hyland reveals she’s received third dose of COVID-19 ‘booster’ vaccination and a flu shot: ‘Stay healthy and trust science!’

  • The 30-year-old actress — who’s immunocompromised following a history of transplants due to kidney dysplasia — played it safe with the booster shot
  • She was born with kidney dysplasia, a condition in which the internal structures of one or both of a fetus’ kidneys do not develop normally while in the womb
  • Hyland underwent a kidney transplant from her father in 2012, before having another one from her younger brother Ian in 2017, after the first one failed
  • High-risk groups are now eligible for the extra dose after the FDA approved the third vaccine for ‘certain immunocompromised individuals’ in August

Sarah Hyland was proud to receive her COVID-19 booster shot.

The 30-year-old actress — who’s immunocompromised following two kidney transplants and other serious health issues — played it safe and also received her yearly flu shot while she was at the doctor’s office.

High-risk groups are now eligible for the extra dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 shot after the FDA approved the third vaccine for ‘certain immunocompromised individuals’ in August amid a surging Delta variant.

Last year, Sarah chatted about how her health history puts her at a higher risk for contracting the disease known as COVID-19.

She told Brad Goreski: ‘I am obviously immunocompromised with my transplant history and am on immunosuppressants, so everything in this house is sanitized. I just took a shot of hand sanitizer, so we’re good.’

The Modern Family star explained that her health is a top priority as her body can’t fight back against an illness the same way another individual may be able to.

‘Say someone gets a 24-hour bug, I get it for a week or more. For me, it’s really dangerous,’ she said.

‘My panic level is pretty high, but I also have a lot of health issues that are very susceptible to stress, so I’m trying to remain calm.’

Her biggest plan of action last year was: ‘My game plan right now is to stay home. I’m just staying home.’

She told Ellen DeGeneres in 2019 that her chronic pain led to severe depression.

‘I’ve had, I want to say, six surgeries over the past couple of years,’ she said before recalling 16 surgeries in her lifetime.

Then when DeGeneres asked if Sarah had ever considered taking her own life, the New York native admitted, ‘Yes’.

‘After 26, 27 years of just always being sick, of just being in chronic pain every single day, you just don’t know when you’re going to have the next good day.’

She added: ‘I would write [suicide] letters in my head to loved ones of why I did it, of my reasoning behind it, how it’s nobody’s fault…’

Ellen then asked how close Sarah came to killing herself, to which she said: ‘I was very very very very close.’
