Sashi Cheliah won MasterChef Australia but admits he’s ‘scared’ of what happens next

Sashi Cheliah won MasterChef Australia with an immense 93 out 100 points- the highest grand finale total ever for a winner in the show’s history.

But the 39-year-old admits he’s ‘scared’ of what happens now that he’s been catapulted into food industry fame.

‘[I’m] actually a bit scared!’ the prison officer told PopSugar after his thunderous victory on Tuesday night.

What happens next? Sashi Cheliah won MasterChef Australia but the 39-year-old admits he’s ‘scared’ of what happens now that he’s been catapulted into food industry fame

Sashi admitted that working as a chef full time – along with all the fame that comes with winning the high profile competition – is a tad daunting.

‘I don’t know what to expect after this. It’s going to be a new ride for me,’ the South Australian confessed to the website.

He added: ‘On the show, I was enjoying it, taking it day by day, but now thinking about going into the food industry full time is a bit nerve-wracking.’

As this year’s MasterChef, the Singapore-born cook has won $250,000 in prize money and a monthly column in Australia’s leading food magazine, Delicious.

Despite his concerns, Sashi’s victory, and the reputation that comes with it, has been well earned.

A fan favourite all throughout the series, he scored 93 out of a possible 100 after taking on two pressure tests in an explosive season finale.

He added: 'It's going to be a new ride for me. On the show, I was enjoying it, taking it day by day, but now thinking about going into the food industry full time is a bit nerve-wracking'

The former Singapore Police Force officer left his competitor Ben Borsht, 31, trailing far behind with a score of 77 of out 100.

The pair were asked with recreating Heston Blumenthal’s gravity-defying ‘Counting Sheep’ dessert in one final pressure test.

With Ben trailing by 16 points in the final round there was little chance he’d catch up, and indeed, Sashi reigned supreme, recreating the floating meringues dish to near perfection and taking home the ultimate title of MasterChef 2018.
