Savannah Guthrie and Dylan Dreyer brought their baby boys to the Today show on Friday to settle their intense Eagles versus Patriots rivalry by having the tots race in an adorable ‘Baby Bowl.’
Savannah, 46, and her husband Mike Feldman are raising their one-year-old son Charley to be a diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan, while Dylan Dreyer, 36, and her husband Brian Fichera are teaching their one-year-old son Calvin to love the New England Patriots as much as they do.
After more than a week of trash talking, the two brought their sons to Studio 1A for a crawling race to predict the winner of the Super Bowl — and the competition couldn’t have been cuter.
Too cute! Patriots fan Dylan Dreyer had her one-year-old son Calvin (L) went head to head with Savannah Guthrie’s Eagles-loving son Charley (R) at the Today show ‘Baby Bowl’ on Friday
Competition: Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford served as referees as the Today show stars and their husbands rooted on their one-year-old sons
Close as can be in age: Charley and Calvin were both born in December 2016 and are now 13 months old
Hoda Kotb, 53, and Kathie Lee Gifford, 64, served as referees on the makeshift football field, and they both got a laugh when they announced the boys’ stats ahead of the showdown.
‘Stepping up for the Philadelphia Eagles is Savannah and Mike’s son Charley. He is 13-and-a-half months old. He weighs a hefty 27lbs,’ Hoda said. ‘He’s very coordinated. He could even clap and stick out his tongue on demand.’
‘Representing the New England Patriots is Dylan and Brian’s son Calvin,’ Kathie said while introducing Charley’s competition. ‘He’s 13 months [and] weighs in at 23lbs.
‘During his lifetime, the Patriots are the only team to have ever won the Super Bowl, so lets see if he can carry on the tradition.’
Stats: Charley, who is just a few weeks older than Calvin, weighed in at 27lbs
Tradition? The Patriots are the only team to have ever won the Super Bowl in Calvin’s lifetime
Making friends: Charley and Calvin were more interested in each other at first
Start: Both boys turned to look at Savannah as she ran to the opposite end of the ‘field’
Unsurprisingly, each family was decked out in their teams’ jerseys.
While Charley donned a pint-size Eagles’ jersey with his first name emblazoned on the back, Calvin supported the Patriots’ quarterback in his Tom Brady jersey.
At the start of the race, Hoda explained that each baby would be placed at the 50-yard line. Whoever crawled to their parents first would be named the winner — and ultimately predict which team was going to win Super Bowl 52.
Hoda pointed out that it was going to be an interesting race because it was the boys’ nap time, and she wasn’t wrong.
On the move: Charley was the first to break away, and it looked like he had the race in the bag
Oh no! After a quick crawl to his parents, Charley stopped dead in his tracks
Intense race: While Savannah and her husband Mike Feldman urged Charley along, Calvin quickly crawled to his mom and dad on the opposite end of the field
Before they could even get started, Calvin kept crawling off the 50-yard line, and then the two boys took more interest in each other than the race.
The camaraderie prompted one of the dads to yell that they aren’t supposed to be friends with the competition.
Charley was the first to break away, and it looked like he had the race in the bag as he swiftly made his way to his parents. However, he abruptly stopped right before crossing the finish line.
While Charley’s parents were begging him to keep going, Calvin did a quick crawl to his mom and dad and won in a stunning upset. Charley crossed the finish line shortly after, causing some confusion for Hoda.
Total upset: Despite Charley’s lead, Calvin ended up being the first one to cross the finish line
Celebration: Dylan and her husband Brian Fichera through their hands in the air after they were announced the official winners
Hoda asked for a replay, admitting she missed what happened. But the replay clearly showed that Calvin was the true winner because his hands crossed the line first.
Kathie called it a ‘total upset,’ and Dylan added: ‘Just like Brady and the Patriots, he is a late finisher.’
Little Calvin won a diaper cake, while Charley’s family got one of Kathie Lee’s CDs, proving that everyone was a winner in this race.
To create buzz for the matchup, Savannah and Dylan both took to social media early in the morning to share photos of their boys in their jerseys.
Whoops! Savannah later admitted on Instagram that Charley was distracted by the balloons
Too cute: The Today show stars shared plenty of photos of their boys ahead of the race
Adorable: ‘Calvin is not so sure about his competition,’ Dylan captioned this image
Philadelphia fans: Chef Brian Duffy (L) and Carson Daly (R) also donned Eagles jerseys on Friday’s show
Big fans: Savannah posted a throwback photo of herself cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles with her family on the day she learned her team was heading to the Super Bowl
Proud: Dylan and Brian posed with Calvin after the New England Patriots won their playoff game against the Jacksonville Jaguars last month
Divided: Savannah and Dylan pledged allegiance to their teams on the Today show the day after they learned the Eagles and Patriots were going to the Super Bowl
While posting a snapshot of Charley and Calvin touching heads, Savannah wrote: ‘Our babies go head to head – literally – to predict the Super Bowl later on @TODAYshow #crawlers .’
Dylan shared a photo of Calvin looking over his shoulder, writing: ‘Calvin is not so sure about his competition…don’t trust those Eagles fans bud! The epic showdown of C v. C happens this morning on @klgandhoda #gocalgo #todayshowbabybowl.’
Sharing a video of the race on Twitter, Dylan added: ‘I’ve never been more proud!!! #gocalgo #sorrycharley #yourestillmybff.’
Meanwhile, Savannah was quick to explain the upset when she posted photos from the race on Instagram.
‘The competition was intense. Unfortunately, certain competitors were distracted by balloons #Eagles #babycrawl #wewannarematch.’
Her husband Mike went on to tweet: ‘Important life lesson, son. Starting strong is great, but you need to stay focused, avoid distractions and finish strong. #flycharleyfly #EaglesNation.’
