A thrifty mother has turned the useless space under her stairs into a mini haven for her little girl after creating an impressive playhouse for less than £100.

Karen Adamson, 37, from Midlothian in Scotland, created the den for her daughter, Holly, three, after seeing how much she enjoyed the playhouse in the family’s garden.

The Home Care manager used bargain materials from B&M, Amazon and B&Q to create the miniature home.

Speaking exclusively to FEMAIL, Karen explained: ‘We did it because my daughter loves pretending to make us dinner and she has a playhouse in the garden that she enjoys.’

She continued: ‘So we thought she would love the idea of having her own wee playhouse and she did. Holly absolutely loves it, although she did say “but I haven’t got a dining room!”

Resembling an adorable little cottage, the outside of the playhouse features a cut-out window and a front door with a working doorbell, as well as potted plants on the window sill.

Holly’s den even boasts her own house number and knocker, plus a brick-effect look, before revealing a sofa, toy kitchen and a washing machine inside.

‘I did the project on a Sunday afternoon with my partner Kevan,’ added Karen. ‘It was 3pm by the time we started so it ended up being a late night making sure it was ready for the wee one the next day.’

Using medium-density fibreboard (MDF), the pair got to work making the door and window under the stairs.

‘We already had a door for the cupboard so we cut a hole out of it and lined it with MDF,’ said Karen. ‘We cut out a hole for the widow lined it with MDF and used skirting board for the frame.

Next the couple painted the materials, wallpapered the outside and secured the window box using products from B&M.

A brass number and knocker were added as well as a working doorbell, all from Amazon, and Next – and Karen hopes to add curtains and a letterbox, too.
