Savvy mum who transformed an old 1987 caravan praises $3 Kmart vinyl

A stay-at-home mother-of-two who transformed an old caravan has revealed $3 vinyl from Kmart was the key to creating her dream bohemian van.

Shannon Lott, 32, picked up her $4,800 mobile home last August, and has spent the past six months renovating and transforming the interior with budget Kmart items.

The Melbourne mother said she transformed the caravan by ‘Kmart-ifying’ it – and she is particularly pleased with the 11 vinyl wrap rolls she bought for $35 which have helped to give the van a final flourish.

‘Van update six months on,’ Shannon posted on Facebook on Tuesday.

‘I am impressed! In the last six months in Victoria we have had many zero degree to 43 degree days and the vinyl has NOT moved!

‘I was expecting to have to completely renovate our van this year but to be honest, I’m not even going to bother.’

Shannon continued to say that she has two children and her family are ‘not careful’, but bar a few scratches ‘here and there’, the van is totally fine.

‘For $3 a roll, the Kmart vinyl is amazing!’ she said.

Shannon used the vinyl on her floors, counters, kitchen backsplash, fridge, support poles and table stand.

The mum added to her haul in the soft furnishings department by buying one of the brand’s $29 ottoman stools and two Fifi and Zola cushions worth $20.

Shannon complemented her new purchases with Kmart items she already owned, but said the price of her latest haul was ‘ridiculously cheap’.

She also used the spray on the kitchen tap as well as the handles on the new-look overhead cabinets in the caravan’s living room.

The handles were also bought from Bunnings, as were the $12 MDF boards which sit on an incline behind the couch.

Despite her extensive makeover, Shannon said her son actually made very little wholesale furniture changes to the caravan.

‘All he really did was get rid of the fixed bed, bedside tables and one other cabinet,’ she told FEMAIL.

In place of the previous fixtures, the 32-year-old bought an IKEA sofa bed for $110 on Facebook Marketplace and gave the space a touch of colour with a $49 Target tufted jute rug.

Her total spend on the caravan’s refurbishment across all four stores was $450.

‘I’m planning to travel with my kids and do smaller trips around Victoria, and then do one big trip up to Queensland and back through Northern Territory,’ she said.

‘My son is planning to do long-distance learning while we travel. A lot of it is online so we’re going to have portable 4G Wi-Fi with us,’ she said.
