Sawyers Valley crash: Man dies after his car mysteriously plunged into a property’s dam late at night

A man has died after ploughing his car into a dam in a mysterious late night crash.

The blue Mitsubishi Lancer hatchback ended up on its roof submerged in a body of water after veering off a road in the Sawyers Valley, around 40km east of Perth, around 10pm on Wednesday.

Emergency services and police divers worked overnight to remove the driver and the car.

‘Tragically, police discovered the body of a 34-year-old male inside the vehicle,’ WA Police said.

The car was later winched out of the dam, which was on a private property.

Shocked neighbours recalled hearing a commotion as the car slid into the three-metre deep dam and sunk to the bottom of the ‘very murky and very cold’ water.

‘I just saw the tail lights under the water — that was all,’ witness Chris Woodward told Seven News.

He called triple-0 but it was too late to save the driver by the time emergency responders arrived.

Another neighbour described hearing a ‘swooshing sound’.

‘There was absolutely nothing I could do, the dam is about three metres deep, very murky and very cold,’ the neighbour said.

‘It’s terribly tragic, you don’t want this ever to happen on your doorstep.’
