A scaffolder accused of dumping an unconscious woman on the side of the road before fleeing the scene allegedly crawled through a drain to avoid police.

Shane Anthony Horne, 34, is accused of leaving the 27-year-old woman clinging to life in bushland half an hour north-east of the Gold Coast on Tuesday afternoon.

The tradesman, who is also a hobby farmer, was allegedly seen riding at Plantation Crescent in Maudsland on a motorbike about 4pm before he dumped the woman.

Two young boys allegedly spotted him dumping the woman and police were called.

Horne then rode several kilometres down the road before trying to go through a park and abandoning his bike when it got stuck, locals told 9 News.

A security guard approached the 34-year-old but he allegedly fled the scene on foot, sparking a massive manhunt.

Locals said he crawled into a drain in an attempt to get away before waiting several minutes in the tight space and then abandoning his hiding place.

Police were able to track him down using a dog squad and he was arrested about 6.30pm.

Dramatic footage showed a number of police holding Horne down while making the arrest.

The abandoned woman, who was understood to be dealing with the effects of drugs, was resuscitated by paramedics and rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition.

A spokesman for Queensland Police told Daily Mail Australia on Wednesday night her condition improved overnight and she was speaking to police.

Horne appeared at Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with failing to supply necessities of life, unlawful possession of a motor vehicle, driving without a licence and obstructing police.

Horne did not apply for bail, and will reappear on August 6.
