Sea Patrol actor Ian Stenlake is hospitalised under police guard and charged with allegedly assaulting two officers after a vehicle crash


TV and theatre actor Ian Stenlake, known for playing commanding officer Mike Flynn in Nine drama Sea Patrol, has been charged with various offences after an altercation with police and paramedics in Sydney’s eastern suburbs earlier this year.

The Helpmann Award nominee and father of three, 52, allegedly threatened ambulance workers who were trying to assess him after a vehicle crash at a property on Abbey Street in Randwick at about 1.30pm on Tuesday, July 20, leading to police being called to the scene.

After officers arrived, Mr Stenlake allegedly verbally assaulted a male and female constable as they tried to assist him into an ambulance and he was arrested.

He was conveyed to Prince of Wales Hospital under police guard and was then taken to Maroubra Police ­Station, where he was charged with two counts of assaulting a police officer in the execution of duty without actual bodily harm, two counts of common assault, and resisting or hindering a police officer in the execution of duty.

Mr Stenlake was also issued a Penalty Infringement Notice for allegedly ‘not complying with the current [Covid] health orders’.

A NSW Police spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia: ‘Upon his release from hospital about 9pm (Tuesday, July 20, 2021), the man was taken to Maroubra Police Station, where he was charged with assault police officer in execution of duty without actual bodily harm (x 2), common assault (x 2) and resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty.

‘He was also issued a PIN for not complying with the current health orders. The man was refused bail to appear at Waverley Local Court on Wednesday, July 21, 2021.

‘The officers did not require medical assistance.’

A friend of the actor told The Daily Telegraph Mr Stenlake had been struggling before the incident with the Covid ‘shutdown of the enter­tainment industry’.

Mr Stenlake is perhaps best known for his theatre work, with credits including Mamma Mia! (2018), Around the World in 80 Days (2016) and Oklahoma! (2005).

In addition to his starring role in Sea Patrol from 2007 to 2011, he appeared in Nine’s Stingers from 1998 to 2002 and Children’s Hospital in 1997.

He has two children from his first marriage to theatre performer Rachael Beck, and another child from his second marriage to actress Amber Mulley.
