Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Josh Gordon has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL for violating the league’s policies on performance-enhancing substances and substances of abuse, marking another setback in the 28-year-old’s well-publicized struggle with sobriety.

The substances Gordon tested positive for have not been revealed.

This is his first time being suspended for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs, but his sixth time being punished for violating the league’s policies on drugs and alcohol, including a drunk driving suspension, according to Spotrac.com.

ESPN reported that this was Gordon’s fifth suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy.

The league announced the suspension on Monday, a day after Gordon had a 58-yard reception in Seattle’s win over Carolina.

Gordon began the year with the New England Patriots, who placed him on injured reserve in October with a knee injury. The team subsequently waived him, and since the knee injury was apparently not too serious, he was claimed by Seattle on November 1.

In total, he played in five games for the Seahawks, making seven receptions.

Before being released in New England, Gordon was among the Patriots’ leading receivers this season, with 20 catches for 287 yards and a touchdown through six games.

Gordon was reinstated by the NFL in August after having been suspended indefinitely in December 2018, missing the final three games of last season for violations of the league’s substance abuse policy. It ended what had been a strong year for Gordon, who had 40 catches for 720 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games.

A 2012 second-round draft pick by the Cleveland Browns, Gordon was also suspended for the first two games of the 2013 season for a substance abuse policy violation but still caught 87 passes for nine touchdowns and a league-leading 1,646 yards and was named to the All-Pro team.

In a November, 2017 interview with GQ he described himself as a ‘highly functioning’ alcoholic who would play NFL games while intoxicated – typically under the influence of marijuana or alcohol.

‘We would stay at the team hotel, and then players are allowed to go back home, get what they need and then go to the game,’ Gordon said.

‘So I’d leave the hotel early morning, go home, eat breakfast, do my little ritual, whatever it may be, some weed, some alcohol and then go to the game,’ he continued. ‘And then, I’d definitely be partying after every game, win or lose. Every game.’
