Search for two missing sisters who vanished from California home

Desperate hunt for two sisters, 5 and 8, who vanished near their heavily-wooded California home

  • Leia Carrico, 8, and Caroline Carrico, 5, were last seen outside their home in Benbow, north west of Sacramento, on Friday at 2.30pm
  • The girls had asked their mother if they could go for a walk but she said no 
  • Authorities started searching for the girls at 6pm in the heavily-wooded area near their home
  • Boot prints and granola bars were found in the search area on Saturday
  • The mother of the two girls told authorities she had only just purchased that same brand of granola bars 

Police are searching for two missing sisters who vanished after walking off into a wooded area near their California home. 

Eight-year-old Leia Carrico and her five-year-old sister Caroline Carrico were last seen outside their home in Benbow, north west of Sacramento, on Friday at 2.30pm.

Before they disappeared, the girls had asked their mother if they could go for a walk.

She said ‘no’ but noticed soon after that the girls were gone. They are believed to have walked off into the wooded area.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said they were notified of their disappearance at about 6pm after the mother and neighbors tried to search for the girls themselves. 

Authorities were unable to find the girls during their search on Friday night and continued first thing Saturday morning.

Boot prints and granola bars were found in the search area on Saturday, according to Humboldt County Sheriff’s Lt. Mike Fridley. 

The mother of the two girls told authorities she had only just purchased that same brand of granola bars.

The area where search teams are scouring is steep, heavily wooded terrain.

Authorities said Carolina is 3 feet 6 inches tall, 40 pounds, with hazel eyes and blonde hair with bright purple streaks. She was last seen wearing a maroon rain jacket with white horses, blue jeans and pink boots.

Her sister Leia is 4 feet 2 inches tall, 85 pounds, with hazel eyes and blonde hair, with a large freckle on her left cheek. She was last seen wearing a dark gray hooded long sleeve shirt and purple rain boots. 

The sheriff’s office is urging members of the public to stay clear of the search area.
