  • Police said a 63-year-old man had been kidnapped, bound, beaten and placed in the trunk of his own car last week in Seattle’s Ravenna neighborhood
  • After slamming into a home, the car burst into flames and the driver escaped

A man who had been kidnapped, beaten, and stuffed into the trunk of a car was seen escaping the vehicle after the car crashed into a home in Seattle on Thursday.

Witnesses looked on in horror as the unidentified man, 63, crawled out of the trunk of the car, while the 18-year-old driver who had kidnapped him ran off.

Police arrived at a home in the 7200 block of 27th Avenue NE just after 5am to investigate the incident, which is when neighbors shared the details of the ‘absurd’ scene they had just witnessed.

‘We heard a screaming of “ahh, ahh.” I think he was trying to scream for help,’ neighbor Cheng Yu told KING 5 of the man in the trunk.

‘He was beat up pretty bad. They had cut his face with a knife and had beat him up pretty badly,’ said neighbor Raegan McKibbon, who helped the man.

The neighbors described the time before police and fire officials arrived as scary and horrifying.

‘I heard a screeching noise and then just the most sickening crunch,’ Yu said.

While Yu called 911, homeowner Brooks Mierow said he worked quickly to get his family to safety.

‘I got my kids to get their shoes and coats on and get out of the house, I got the dog, and then fired another fire extinguisher into it,’ Mierow said.

The extinguisher, he said, helped slow the spread of the flames until the Seattle Fire Department was able to arrive on the scene.

As they waited, the neighbors reported hearing the screams of the man who had been thrown in his own vehicle’s trunk.

‘There was a gentleman who was sitting outside, kind of by the trunk of his car, and he was all tied up with rope and he was screaming “help me, help me, I’ve just been kidnapped, call 911,”‘ said McKibbon.

The neighbor said as she helped the man cross the street, she saw two people running down the street and away from the car.

The Seattle Fire Department was able to put out the fire and treat the man for non-life-threatening injuries. He was also taken to Harborview Medical Center.

‘I’m glad that no one was injured,’ said Yu.

The neighbor also laughed about the details of the incident, saying: ‘You can’t make this stuff up, it’s just so absurd.’

Gulpan did say they do not believe the attack on the 63-year-old man was targeted.

An 18-year-old male suspect who ‘matched the description’ of one of the suspects was questioned by police, but was later released.
