A super-fit runner who described the Gold Coast marathon as ‘one of the biggest races of my life’ in a Facebook post is fighting for his life after collapsing during the popular event.

Emergency services rushed to the circuit about 9.45am on Sunday after Elanora man Camryn Lloyd and a 34-year-old French national suffered ‘medical incidents’ during the race.

Both men were rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital’s intensive care unit, where Mr Lloyd remains in a critical condition having suffered severe overheating or hyperthermia.

The French national died on Monday morning after reportedly suffering a heart attack just metres from the finish line of the race.

Mr Lloyd was active on social media and posted often about training for his first marathon event.

Just hours before the race, he wrote: ‘Hey God, thank you for this opportunity to run. Thank you for the body you have given me. May I honour you in this run.

‘Help me stay safe and injury free. Give me power and strength. Thank you for the support and guidance.’

In another post he wrote: ‘God has given me this body and I will honour him by pushing my capabilities and achieving greatness’.

‘Warming up for one of the biggest races of my life,’ he wrote in another.

Mr Lloyd was competing in the event to raise funds for the West Bali Orphanage in Indonesia, and had reached just over $2000.

An online fundraising page has been set up by a family member of Lloyd’s as he remains in intensive care.

‘Cam is a strong, incredible man who has dedicated his life to his family and his God,’ wrote Saffron Lloyd.

‘On July 2, Cam participated in the Gold Coast Marathon. After 36km he collapsed with cardiac arrest.

‘After an intense night in the ICU, Cam remains in a critical condition.

‘We’re looking for any and all donations to help Cam’s wife stay afloat and give Cam all the love and attention he deserves and needs at this time.’

In a statement, Events Management Queensland thanked the on-course medical team for the ‘swift provision of critical care’.

‘Our thoughts are with the participants and their families,’ the statement added.

The popular Gold Coast Marathon runs between July 1-2 and attracts tens of thousands of visitors every year owing to its ‘flat, fast, and scenic course’.
