See the embarrassing moment footy great Paul Gallen comes up with the commentary clanger of the year on Channel Nine

Cronulla premiership hero turned Channel Nine footy commentator Paul Gallen has left a Roosters star shocked when he made an embarrassing mistake shortly after the Panthers won Friday night’s clash at Allianz Stadium.

Penrith ran out 22-16 victors to record their ninth straight win over the Chooks and the Sharks great was asking James Tedesco about his side’s loss when he came up with a shocking mix-up live on air.

‘What about big Jared Waerea-Hargreaves’ 300th game tonight? Little bit disappointing. What has he meant to this club?’ Gallen asked the Roosters skipper, referring to the team’s long-serving prop forward.

A clearly puzzled Tedesco paused for a moment before answering, ‘Last week’s 300th game?’ as he gently pointed out that Gallen had his wires completely crossed.

The Roosters skipper (pictured centre during the loss to Penrith) gently reminded Gallen that he’d missed teammate Jared Waerea-Hargreaves’ 300th game by a week 

‘Oh sorry, I thought it was this week, my bad,’ Gallen said, before pressing on by asking, ‘What has he meant to the club, though?’ 

Waerea-Hargreaves’s milestone match was widely publicised, with plenty of stories written and broadcast about it before the Roosters’ hammered Souths 48-6 to mark the occasion.

To add to the embarrassment, some of those stories appeared on Nine, which also mentioned his 300th game several times during their broadcast.

Fortunately for Gallen, his clanger was overshadowed by another shocking mistake during the game – this time from the video ref.

Joey Manu scored what would have been the Roosters’ first try, only for decoy runner Waerea-Hargreaves to be ruled as having obstructed Edwards in a piece of officiating that left fans and experts furious.

On Friday, NRL head of football Graham Annesley said the call was wrong, with the prop 20 metres away from where Manu grounded the ball when he was judged to have prevented Edwards from making a try-saving tackle.

Luckily for the Sharks great, there was an even more embarrassing mistake on Thursday night when the video ref wrongly ruled out Joey Manu’s try (pictured)

Annesely made the unusual step of making the announcement early instead of waiting for his usual Tuesday press conference. 

Had the correct ruling been made, the Roosters would have only been trailing 12-6 in the 22nd minute.  

‘Last week I supported two obstruction rulings by the Bunker,’ Annesley said on Friday.

‘I talked about the need for the lead runner to continue through the defensive line, and for the play not to be turned back through the gap created by a collision with a defender.

‘Neither of these factors were present in last night’s decision … In my opinion, the try would have been scored regardless and the on-field decision should not have been overturned.’
