See the Sam Kerr sledge that came back to haunt the Matildas in their horror Paris Olympics loss

  • Kerr sledged rival nation after 2023 World Cup
  • Included a great laugh at her partner’s expense
  • That nation might have the last laugh at the Olympics

Sam Kerr’s words have come back to haunt her, after the injured Matildas skipper sledged the USA football side for the same reason Australia got flogged by Germany at the Paris Olympics.

The Matildas were the toast of Australian sport in 2023 after finishing a fighting fourth at the FIFA Women’s World Cup by taking the scalps of some soccer powerhouse nations.

After the tournament, the Tillies were on a high and Kerr might the comments that would later come back to bite her and the team.

The comments came in the ill-fated Netflix documentary series ‘Under Pressure: The U.S. Women’s World Cup Team’.

It was supposed to be a behind the veil look at the gutsy US football side as it surged toward the World Cup title, however the women’s football giants instead found themselves ingloriously dumped out in the group stage.

The documentary series ran anyway, and Kerr took the opportunity to heap more misery on the US team by sledging her own partner Kristie Mewis.

‘Do you know you guys conceded eight goals this year, four off set pieces,’ Kerr asks.

‘Yeah I know,’ Mewis replies.

‘Corners, to be exact,’ Kerr clarifies.

‘That’s horrific, half your goals come off corners. Do youse not work on it?’

The attack left Mewis stunned at the time.

‘I’m joking, I’m joking. It has nothing to do with you!’ Kerr said afterward.

‘You were front post, if you’d jumped a little bit higher it wouldn’t have got to the middle of the goal. I’m joking, it had nothing to do with you.’

Mewis remained incredulous while her relative Pat laughed: ‘That was an attack, that was cruel.’

While Kerr was laughing at the time, nobody in the Matildas camp was cracking jokes after being thumped 3-0 by Germany.

Two of those goals came from corners, giving Team USA plenty of ammunition ahead of their upcoming clash at the Olympics.

The loss was a case of déjà vu for coach Tony Gustavsson who presided over a 5-2 thumping at the hands of Germany in his first match in charge of the Matildas.

‘Congratulations to Germany; they were a class better than us tonight, that’s just facts,’ Gustavsson said.

‘We need to be really honest about that, and I said it to the players as well. You can clearly see that they’re up to the speed of international football.

‘We’ve done everything we can to try and prepare for that so it wouldn’t be too big of a surprise, but I don’t think we were ready for it.’

Former Socceroo and football analyst Craig Foster said the damage could have been even greater had it not been for the efforts of one Matildas star.

‘If it wasn’t for the incredible Katrina Gorry making tackle after tackle in the first half, we could have been in more trouble,’ he said.

The Matildas will be hoping to have experienced midfielder Tameka Yallop back for the matches against Zambia and the United States after she was ruled out of the Germany clash through injury.

The 33-year-old veteran was a late omission after two contact injuries she suffered in early July.

She is expected to be fit to be back in the 18-player squad for the Matildas’ next match against Zambia in Nice on Sunday.
