Self-portrait by serial killer John Wayne Gacy on sale for $8,000 44 years after he murdered 33 men

A self-portrait that was allegedly painted by serial killer John Wayne Gacy has gone up for sale for $8,000.

The chilling artwork is available on Cult Collectibles, a dark website that sells things that are linked to notorious murderers; the site recently made headlines after it listed infamous cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer’s urn, said to have once contained his ashes, for $250,000.

Gacy, who raped, tortured, and murdered 33 young men and boys during a six-year killing spree in a Chicago suburb between 1972 and 1978, allegedly made the painting while he was on death row.

Titled ‘Patches the Clown,’ the artwork appears to even have been signed by the killer – with a scrawled ‘J.W. Gacy’ visible in the left corner – however the website has not confirmed where they sourced the artwork.

The alleged self-portrait was painted in bright, bold colors and portrays a sad-looking clown holding balloons with a forest of trees and a dark gray sky behind him.

Gacy was known to have painted numerous artworks while he was behind bars on death row awaiting execution. Several of his eerie pictures were auctioned off in 2017, including several chilling pieces that featured Pogo the Clown, the evil alter-ego Gacy used to lure children and young men before raping and killing them.

On the back of the painting, the killer allegedly wrote in script handwriting, ‘Patches the Clown. John W. Gacy. Oil 781-93’ – referring to the brand of the canvas that was used.

Back in April, Netflix released a chilling documentary with never-before-heard recordings made by Gacy from his death-row prison cell, called Conversations With a Killer: The John Wayne Gacy Tapes.

In the eerie recordings, Gacy was heard boasting to his lawyers about ‘outsmarting’ the cops and preying on ‘the innocent virile ones’ during his six-year killing spree, revealing that, to him, his victims were ‘not human beings.’

He even admitted at one point that murdering a young man gave him ‘a mind-numbing orgasm.’

Born in Chicago in 1942, Gacy had a tough childhood under the punitive thumb of an alcoholic father who was physically and mentally abusive.

The closeted homosexual married a woman named Marlynn Meyers in 1964, and the couple moved to Waterloo, Iowa, where he managed three Kentucky Fried Chicken franchises for his father-in-law.

The pair welcomed two children shortly after, Michael in 1966 and Christine in 1967. During this time, Gacy  joined the local ‘Jaycees’ – a civic organization for men between the ages of 18 to 40, who are interested in doing charitable work.

But his picture-perfect family man image came crashing down in 1968, when Gacy was convicted of sodomy for assaulting a 15-year-old boy named Donald Voorhees, who was the son of a fellow Jaycee.

He was sentenced to 10 years in prison, but was released on good behavior after 18 months; Marlynn filed for divorce shortly after and Gacy remained estranged from his biological children for the rest of his life.

After prison, Gacy was desperate to put his past behind him and re-invent himself in Chicago.

In 1972, he got remarried to a woman named Carole Hoff, a divorcee with two daughters, and the two moved into the middle class blue collar suburban neighborhood of Norwood Park Township.

Over the next six years, Gacy kidnapped, molested, and killed multiple men and boys around the area – and would store their bodies in a crawlspace in his house.

During this time, he began regularly performing as ‘Pogo’ or ‘Patches the clown’ at charitable functions, while also running a construction company called PDM Contracting.

In the doc, he said he chose to dress up as the jester because he ‘enjoyed the limelight’ and ‘being involved with something,’ comparing it to the ‘feeling you get out of coming out of church on Christmas Eve.’

He also enjoyed the invisibility of it, explaining ‘When you clowned, you’re hiding your image.

‘There are things that you could do that you wouldn’t do as a person. Clowns can get away with anything. Clowns can get away with murder.’

As time went on, Police started to become suspicious of Gacy after they noticed that many of his co-workers had gone missing.

They soon obtained a search warrant for his house and discovered pornography, shackles, drivers licenses related to missing persons, and a ring that was owned by one of the victims.
